QuiltE - Hmmm, Wonder Woman? Nope not my style. Way too flashy. And why does she have to run around in a bathing suit and thigh boots. Really the chick needs some clothes on in my Humble Opinion.

Vickig626 - Have you ever tried using the fabric crayons? I've seen some really awesome quilts made with them. Then you could trace the monsters on to the fabric and color them in. It's definitely a technique I want to try down the line.

Charlottemarie - I have to tell you that I'm enjoying Toby and his adventures the most. I look forward to hearing more as you continue to build on your story quilt. You have created a very original special project quilt. Now that, is imagination at its best.

Crayons is a thought. Will have to think about it once I get the TARDIS done.

Since there is no specific due date involved, I'm very tempted to join. I have been planning a Star Trek character for my brother.

Is there a size requirement? Would approx 52 x 52 be ok?
Also, I return to school August 2013, may not finish by then. OK?
    Tomorrow I must stop procrastinating.

Hi Beth, Our Host has been tremendously busy with work commitments at the moment. So I'm gonna try and pinch hit for her and reply to your question.

There is no size requirements on this project. The project is yours to design completely. The challenge is just that the quilt be designed around a central character. The spacecraft, USS Enterprise -1077 is in my Humble Opinion definitely a entity in itself. LOL So you could use it as your central character and then add blocks in of the different crew members.. and don't forget the Trebals, LOL lots and lots of them multiplied. My DH is a Star Trek fan so I will be very interested in following your progress. There is no time limit. It is an ongoing challenge.
    Have an awesome day!

I love Star Trek - huge fan of the original and The Trouble with Tribbles is my favorite episode. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Love your new monster Jenniky. And thanks for pinch-hitting for me.

Welcome Beth33 - As Jenniky stated there is no size nor date requirement. Have fun and amaze us all with your creativity. A Star Trek quilt sounds like a great idea. We'll be here to cheer you on.

I'm making great progress on my custom glass order so took a little Franky time last night. Franky now has shoes and ankles. I plan to put up a photo tomorrow. All those 1 1/2 inch squares are sure going to keep me busy.

In order to get some separation for his legs (and arms/torso) I think I will quilt using a funky colour - maybe lilac or orange. Haven't yet decided if I use double the quilt batting to make his legs puffier. I don't think so. That step is a long way off, though, even if I use Jenniky's QAYG.

I'm taking an appliqué class and my instructor suggests using a thinner batting to add the extra puff. Just glue it around the section that you want to puff before you sandwich it to the regular batting. She pointed out that with a double of the same loft batting you will wind up with puckers in the foundation or backing that are almost impossible to quilt out. She actually used silk batting and it did add height to the section and everything laid nice and flat.

Thanks gardnergal970. I doubt I'll try to pouf him up. I'll most likely just use the coloured thread for the separation. I'm also thinking of doing an embroidery chain or split stitch instead. Lots of time to decide.

Looks like it's all "up" for Franky now!!
A great start ... and now onwards to his knickers?
I just knew you wouldn't ignore him til the etching was done!!!

Another way for puff ... lofty poly batting .... less quilting where you want puff and more quilting elsewhere. Could be stippling or cross-hatching across your 1" finished squares would flatten it all down nicely!

And too ... you'll be sure to do lots of embellishing that'll help pop him out, if not puffed!

(note: ... purple, just for Franky!)

Wow such great progress you ladies are having and love the stories behind all these characters. So busy right now no time for this fun, but as I said, watching and reading the fun going on. After quilt show season will be able to join in and then maybe I will be done with these UFOs, to bad I did not have one to incorporate here but none to be had.

Franky got more love this past weekend. I was ahead of schedule on the glass etching (as in FINISHED the custom order) so played with Franky. His britches/leg triangles are sewn together and he is one row away from having his britches showing. (OK, I'm tired, so sue me. )

Yeah for you, for being ahead of schedule ... now to stay that way, right?A

Did you give Franky a 3-D effect with those triangle? or are they pieced?

All's good ... so long as Franky doesn't get his knickers in a knot!!

Actually, Franky is behind schedule by about three weeks. All his triangle transitions will be pieced. Too much work otherwise, even more than he already is. Poor Franky is going to be ignored again this weekend because there is too much going on.

    Yeaaaaa for Franky taking shape!
Is that the start of his hands showing too?

Are the shows over now til later in the fall for you?
Whgich leaves with the suspicions that you and Franky will be having many dates the next while!

I'm going to be looking forward to seeing continuing progress reports!

Welcome back for a short period QuiltE.

I'm surprised, given how busy I am, that Franky is getting some love. No, those aren't his hands yet. Those are just a couple of different tan spider fabric squares that I am inserting to break up all the pale cream spiderweb background. There are a total of 8 tan squares.

Not that many more rows and you will start to see his hands. I'll let you know.

    Another two rows last night.

One more craft fair Saturday and Sunday of this weekend and then Franky should really grow. I'm proud of myself. The woman that I did the 36 mugs for told me she needs another few sets immediately and I told her it would have to wait until October. She wasn't impressed but, tough. My monster needs me and I need some downtime.

One of these days, I'll show everyone the perfect fabric I found to back Franky and friends. I may even show you who his friends will be.
