Martina: I'm sorry to hear about your friend.
Conchalea: I started smiling as soon as I saw your table runner because I have that fabric. It was in a donation. :). Very pretty table runner. rryder: Congrats on your purchase. Enjoy using it. |
Second day on this quest and I bought fabric. The quilt is on the design wall and needs a back. I did buy less than I need so I can use more stash making a ladder of scraps to expand it. On the other hand, I went to JoAnn's and didn't buy anything else but the red I needed. There were a lot of better fabrics in clearance, but they are still there.
|
You are good, Irishrose.... Buying fabric to complete a project when you don't have anything in stash is within the guidelines. But, good job in buying less and strategizing the backing with stash. You get a thumbs up!!!
|
Oh, I know the backing is allowed, but I just thought my timing was funny - join on Sunday and buy fabric on Tuesday.
|
Finished a top from scraps and stash 75x60. And put together 2 kits with completed blocks, back and binding which is about 3 yds ea. This is an estimated 40 yds. It so easy to collect fabric. Takes a lot more time to use it. The process is quite enjoyable and satisfying.

I had a mediocre week in terms of my Moratorium-Hobby Lobby had some great fabrics in the $3 bin, and I ended up buying some 1/4 yd. cuts to use for my 365 and DJ (2 yards total), with the leftovers to go into the bin of precut scraps. But I did pull out a piece of about 8 yards from my stash for my mother's quilt and curtains, so I am still ahead!
|
I am hanging in there. Bought one wide quilt backing, but it is already basted and half quilted. Went to JAF today. Bought a spool of thread and 1.5 yds of blackout lining for the bedroom window.
|
Being on this moratorium has been amazingly helpful to me. Today I went through my emails and even though lots of folks were offering Ntional quilter’s day or St. Patrick’s day specials, I didn’t buy anything... and I really tried, but I kept thinking about how the various special deal fabrics would fit into my stash and deciding they wouldn’t add anything I needed...

Good for you, you guys!!! I did go to LQS today and bought a 1930's jelly roll for SIL's b-day present....so this doesn't count since it doesn't hit my stash and was a present.....but, also, bought navy solid for a QOV I will be starting since I didn't have anything else in my stash that could be used in place of it.....so, I did good. though, she had some awesome new fabric come in...dang....that was hard to turn away from. She warned me that she is getting a new patriotic line coming in and, since I do so many for vets, she wanted me to know. So, I'm going to inventory my patriotic stash and see what I've got...then decide.

Sounds like being on this thread is helping a lot of people with “mindful” shopping. Going into a fabric store & only buying what’s needed to complete a project can be hard! As to the email lures-I’ve taken the advice of people on my knitting forum & unsubscribed from those siren calls. If I don’t see the temptations, I won’t buy them. Good job, everyone!
|
It's great that most of you are looking at our stash before going shopping for fabric we need. I've been doing the same for the last 2 weeks. I'm going to work on UFO's or projects I already have material for this year before I buy new fabric. This way I will be making more room for other things.
No buying anything new from LQS or fabric stores. Nothing really catches my eye or taste. I've been going through my hobby boxes downstairs and really don't need to buy anything. I like to keep my e-mails from my favorite LQS b/c I like to look and get new ideas. Not that I need new ideas. I'm still working on the same projects I have been working on for the last few months. I will need to start a new project for a charity quilt tomorrow. We have our guild meeting and it's a Charity Sew day, all day. Yea! I think my project will be a throw top. I'll be using the fabric I bought earlier this month. It's washed, just need to cut it out later today, so it's ready to sew tomorrow. |
Thursday my new to me LA was set up. I was able to put a full size quilt on and quilt it in about 4 hours. Now I'm hand stitching the binding on. When finished I have figured 9 yards of stash in scraps, sashing, borders, backing and binding. Yeah...photo when I'm done. Doesn't it feel good to use fabric you have at home?
|
VQW was this weekend, and it was great for my fabric moratorium/stash usage. 4 backings made (and 3 actually quilted). That's a total of 15 yards out of my stash, just for the backings. And all the associated tops were stash fabric too! And so far so good - no purchases this month.
|
Way to go Krista....Are the quilted quilts UFO's or for customers?
I had a productive evening. I put a baby quilt on the LA about 44" square...made 3" leaders for the backing as it was just wide enough...again learning as I go. When finished with this it will mean 3 yards from stash gone... |
Tomorrow, to the LQS I go. And I've been saving up projects that need backs. Already hunted the stash. So this is planned purchases. Maybe I'll find something I really would like to buy that will work for those backs.

I’ve still managed to not spend anything at all so far this year. I spent the past couple weekends working on going through totes ( the mess) in my sewing room. Made some great progress and bagged up 2 large bags that were donated away. I used another 7 yards of scraps to prep- start my next scrappy quilt- just for foundations and center triangles. The strings will I’m sure add up to a few more yards— making 180 string blocks. I am determined to use scraps- keep making scrap quilts this year until they are much more manageable.
I have 3 good sized baskets full of 3/4” - 1” wide long strips for rope twist projects, locker hooking and clothesline wrap projects too, I don’t know how many yards go into one of my baskets or rugs but ( A Lot!) I’m using those up too. |
Ckcowl.......these are awesome!!! Amazing transformation from scrap heap to these beauties....love them...
|
CKcowl, those are amazing! So is the number of quilts and other items you make.
|
Amazing baskets and using stash.
|
Ckcowl: Awesome use of scraps!
|
Ckcowl; agree with other comments. Awesome use of scraps.
|
Deliberatly went to LQS today. One of the bought fabrics is already cut and that project is ready for quilting.
Bought some extras because I'm sure they're needed for combining to finish other projects. And all were on the 1/2 price table. |
What technique are you using for these "ropes"???? Especially the second one. How did you make that?
Marcia |
Ck- those are awesome! I started making clothesline trivets and bowls late last year after having the clothesline and lots of stings on hand in my todo pile for several years. The technique I’ve been ising looks like it’s similar to the last one you pictured- wrapping the strings of fabric around the clothesline and then zigzagging, but your other pieces look like you’re using a different technique- I’d love to hear how they were done!

Hey all, I posted a pic. in the pictures section of my latest art quilt. It's made 100% from stash, the large piece of green fabric that makes up the background and also got used for the backing was a piece of home dec fabric (possibly linen) that came from my grandmother's house and is at least 20 years old. All the small scraps that are stitched to it were leftovers from quilt or home dec projects that I did over the years, some of those are from 20-30 years ago YIKES! The blue on the outside is scraps of batting that I painted (that was a fun project). Anyway, I forgot to get it's measurements because I needed to get it to the gallery by their Thursday deadline for a show that's opening tonight LOL! if you get a chance take a look. I had fun doing it.
And still haven't bought any new fabric this month. In fact, I just went through an looked and I haven't bought any fabric since Jan. 7 and that was bought specifically to make the borders for my temp quilt (which is still on hold) so officially, I have not purchased any fabric for stash this year! Rob |
You Go! Ryder.
|
Rob...very cool creation....I rocked with Bob today....so funny.... And, good job on purchases. You do like to keep fabric for years, don't you? Lol! 20 to 30 years old? OMGoodness....I just threw out fabric that I used to make curtains in my first apartment eons ago (don't ask...lol!). Little cherries on white. It was so thin I could count the threads. Well...I was on a budget back then so I got what I got. Gave me so many memories to see that fabric. I suppose it is the same for you.

Today I had a 1st for me. I went on a 4 shop - shop hop and only bought a $15.00 tee shirt. Not that I didn’t want to buy out the stores. Just that I I didn’t need anything but backing and background fabric. Just didn’t take the time to look seriously. I need to continue to work on my UFO’s and WIP’s. I have 6 projects that just needs to be quilted and bind if needed. Depending on how I finish them. I decided my weekend project to clear off my quilting table and set up a small quilt to quilt. I’ll check out the quilting on the machine. I need to kick out my kitties out of my sewing room to do this.
I like all the quilting projects. So pretty and nice. I hope everyone enjoys their weekend. |

To make quilts quickly, I've been using rail fence. With 3 1/2yd WOF strips, I can make a top 36 1/2" x 42 1/2". The guild comfor quilt program needs larger quilts. Most of my fabric is 1/2yd pieces. So I got creative. The layout was done on the design wall. Now that it's made, I can see how it can be done in strip sets-a lot faster. Will do this again.

Ooooooooh! Pretty peththefabric!!! Rail fence is a fun pattern to experiment with colors... I've only done this in strips but I haven't used scraps so I can see the challenge in doing this pattern in smaller pieces. 1/2 yard should do the trick with stripping.
Worked on SBS today.. 26 to go.... I am blasting through the background fabric for this project and had to pull more from stash (I had to steal WOW from a future project but I overbought so hopefully, I will still have enough).. |
Nice job...ptfabric!
Teen, just keep sewing, just keep sewing...you will have them done in no time. Put another baby quilt on the LA today...almost done. I "wrote" in the horizontal dark border, and have to turn the fabric to "write" in the other 3 borders after it was all quilted. This quilt has a central cheater block and successive borders with cornerstones. I have to remember how I quilted in the top cornerstones..they aren't the same as the bottom:D..all part of the learning experience! I need to find another short piece of yellow dot binding for this, if I can't then will have to dig a bit into stash to finish it off. |
Hi y'all! Thank you for this thread. I took the pledge as soon as I joined and I haven't bought any fabric since then. Everything has come out of my stash! but you can't see the difference. I have enough left to make 1000 more quilts at least... enough to keep me busy for the next 50 years ... I'm only 80 yrs old now, so I have plenty of time ... LOL! I hope there are sewing machines in Heaven!

Hi Silly Susan,
I am in the same boat as you! But here is my plan. I am going to buy a camper. Dig a big hole in the back yard for the camper to fit into, so when I die, my stash, etc. plus me will go into the camper and it will be topped with dirt. I don't just want to be buried in the ground with nothing to do. Silly Ellie |
Lol!! Wonderful giggle for my day... Good plan, Blue Bell! I believe God's got our back and will likely have a LQS at our disposal.
Silly Susan.... Good job using your stash and fulfilling your commitment to yourself. I bet your stash is a blast to pilfer.. |

Well...today was close to a fall. Saw a beautiful laser cut applique pattern for a sailboat wallhanging kit. It was $99! But it was all cut accurately, and absolutely gorgeous, and DH’s sister just bought a sailboat in St Pete, and....
It was in my shopping cart. I was filling in the credit card number. I stopped, removed it from my cart. Bought a Hawaiian applique pattern from Etsy. I will find fabric in my stash that will work. |
Way to go Krisb!
