I pulled all the fabric for the BH mystery from my stash except some more golds and neutrals. Bought a backing for the Northern Lights quilt and some black. That should be it until spring—or later, because have three more quilts kitted, and down to three for quilting on the big machine in A’ville.

SillySusan: Congratulations on making progress on decluttering.

I needed blenders so I bought 2 grays for a total of 4 yards from my LQS plus other supplies on Small Business Saturday. They had 40% off most items. Then I went to JoAnn Fabrics and purchased more blenders plus a red for an extra color for Bonnie Hunter's quilt. I washed the red with another red 2 times because the color catcher was very red the first time. More like pink the second time. I was surprised as I did a swish test and they didn't fade. :(. I may need to wash once more. These fabrics will be basically used in donation quilts.

SillySusan 11-26-2018 07:18 PM

Thanks, y'all for the encouragement and kind words. I think we all did well on this year's moratorium. Most of the fabric that everyone bought was necessary for the quilts in progress and not for stash.

I delivered the quilts and sheets today and was handed 17 receiving blankets that needed hemming. Someone cut them out, but donated them without finishing them. So they are now on the ironing board,.. waiting for me. ... Another pile, but I will have them done in a few days, along with the two tops that are ready to be sandwiched. Life is good!!

Conchalea 11-26-2018 08:46 PM

Even though our moratorium is officially over, it seems everyone is shopping mindfully instead of ‘just because.’ I think it’s great! I haven’t bought any fabric since late summer to finish my daughter’s UFO. It is now being quilted so that fabric is not in stash. For the big sales, I only bought a Prime deal on thread, so still no new fabric!

rryder 11-27-2018 08:38 AM

Silly Susan- congratulations on your declutter holiday!

Vasilisa 11-29-2018 10:11 AM

Hello :) Here in Poland we don't have much of a Black Friday, so my moratorium is no buying unless I have a good reason or a good excuse :) Today I got a permanent contract at my work and this month's salary arrived on my account, too - and now I'm coming home with a good dinner's price worth of fabric. I got them in a thrift store, though, which means a full bag of nice material!

rryder 11-29-2018 10:15 AM

Congratulations on the permanent contract! I'd say a nice thrift store bag full of nice material is an excellent way to celebrate!

Rob

Congrats to Vasilisa on the contract. You are just like me, celebrating with fabric.

There is a pattern of leaves that I want to do, and it calls for batiks. The only batiks I have are a couple of jelly rolls. So I sewed them together. Will it work?

Vasilisa...congrats on the contract and your thrift store find... Excellent way to celebrate...

Battle...a pieced leaf will look awesome, I bet. Very creative..

SillySusan 11-30-2018 03:00 PM

Wonderful, Vasilisa. Good for you on the contract and the great buy on the fabric! Happy quilting!

I have a new physical therapy clinic - 50 miles from home in the same strip mall as JoAnn Fabrics. Not good. There is another location on the other side of town - I may have to switch. All I purchased was enough to make an elephant wallhanging for a Christmas present, but there is a peach batik calling my name. 1 1/4 yards (1/2 for the elephant, 3/4 for background) is not bad for two days of browsing, but still........... Now I need to draw an elephant.

I think I need to join the no buy challenge for 2019. I have SO much fabric and order more with every project that I plan. Not that I actually sew on these thought up projects. It just gets deeper and deeper.

We’ll have a new thread starting for 2019. I’ll probably start it around Dec 28-30, & I’ll give a reminder on this year’s thread for all who want to continue & for the new people wanting encouragement on the fabric moratorium.

You sound just like me! I joined the moratorium last February because I have fabric everywhere... in bins, boxes, totes, closets, shelves, and floor. On Thanksgiving Day, I finally cleared some space on my spare bedroom's floor! The people here will encourage you and keep you straight. If you are like me, you won't see your stash shrinking for several months, but don't give up! The trick is don't buy any more fabric and quilt like a crazy woman!! :)

PaperPrincess 12-03-2018 07:09 AM

Party's over, 52 hungry people. SIL 1 strongly hinted she would like a quilt just like I made for a friend (with fabric discontinued 5 years ago), SIL 2 again tried to steal the quilted table runner to make an obi for a Christmas kimono (I think she was kidding). I think I'll be able to hold strong until new years, however, there's a Connecting Threads collection I've had my eye on and if they mark it down before the end of the year, all bets are off! looking forward to doing better in 2019

LindaJane 12-03-2018 07:11 AM

I made up two quilts for a family in need this week. Simple quilts from panels and no trip to the fabric store needed. Love using what I have to help others.

SillySusan 12-03-2018 02:38 PM

Good going, LindaJane. I'm sure those folks will appreciate your gifts every time they are wrapped in them.

happylab 12-03-2018 10:39 PM

I ordered notions for my sewing machines and 1 piece of background fabric. I went to my LQS and p/u my 2 BOM and bought a QOV book. I also dropped off my Nebraska quilt top to be quilted. I spent, but didn't go too crazy. I'm debating about buying a large piece of blue fabric. I could use this fabric in numerous projects I have going. I will probable go back and p/u the fabric. And that should finish my fabric buying for a several months. Chat with you all next year. Happy holidays everyone.

I had planned on continuing my personal fabric moratorium through the end of the year, but then those luscious dyed muslin fat quarter bundles at Craftsy went on sale and I grabbed three to go with the one I already had so that I’d have a full yard of each color. A new pair of Machingers gloves and Ginghers shears also jumped into my basket. DH has been told he can wrap them up and put them under the tree for me- so....in reality, rather than falling off the wagon, I like to think that I did a good deed by saving DH from having to Look for christmas gifts for me. I also told him to check my Amazon wish list as I’m in need of new socks.:p

Rob

SillySusan 12-04-2018 05:12 AM

Rryder, you're Christmas gifts under the tree to yourself reminds me that I did the same thing years ago when the kids were toddlers. My husband was a true Grinch and wouldn't buy any gifts at all! (I shouldn't call him a Grinch. Believe me, that's insulting to the Grinch!) So when I ordered toys, etc., from Sears for him and the kids, I added stuff for me. When the box came from, I took out the presents for me and wrapped them right away so I didn't get a chance to really see them. When Christmas morning came and all the packages were opened, I had something to open and cheer about. Silly, huh.

I did really good for 2018 not buying anything that wasn’t absolutely necessary- no added stash at all and used what I had. I started the quilt ville mystery quilt the day after Thanksgiving and pulled everything from my shelves. Managed to clean them up & saw some real progress in making a dent. I still have ( tons) of scraps- they feel overwhelming and out of control. But I’m making progress. I hope another year of moratorium participation will help me get rid of the scraps too. I have ( shared) scraps with anyone who wants them- need to find more people who want them. I’m more than willing to send them away- since they multiply faster than I can possibly use them. ;)

I am pretty happy with the shelves now.

SillySusan 12-04-2018 08:35 AM

Good for you, ckcowl! Doesn't it feel great to see some progress? Thanksgiving clean-up got me a cleared spot on my spare bedroom floor! Yipee!!

Your shelves are so well organized! Great job!

elly66 12-04-2018 09:46 AM

Rob that's what I told my husband too when I shopped the Black Friday weekend sales and couldn't resist. Opened one package but the other I'll probably put under the tree as well.
Those shelves look great ckcowl.

Conchalea 12-04-2018 11:26 AM

Great job, Ckcowl! When you use your scraps, you should post on the thread about using up scrap mounds. Your projects could certainly inspire others to use the scraps hiding in the stash mounds.

Teen 12-04-2018 07:35 PM

Ckcowl.....great job and good looking stash!

Rob... Good thinking! I bought a new Iron, wrapped it, and wrote on label "To me...From me..." I gave DH a short short list of easily packable things...I think they call them "gift cards". Lol!

Darcyshannon 12-04-2018 11:08 PM

Okay, I joined the moratorium and it did help me to avoid temptation. I didn’t do any sales (I have plenty of fabric) at Thanksgiving.

So now, I will set up goals for 2019. I think it has made me spend my time more wisely and I am working on finishing started projects. In fact, speaking of which, I need to sew on a binding for a Christmas quilt I plan to give my mom. I know she will like it and I hope it will cheer her up. She lost her oldest dog last year, her constant companion, she does have one dog left but still it was hard on her.

JJBlaine 12-05-2018 01:12 AM

Thank you to everyone here on this thread for sharing their sucesses (and slips). Even though I haven't posted much the past few months, I have followed along, and it has been a huge help!

I didn't do too bad on my moratorium for the year. I spent less than $100 on quilting fabrics for the stash since January, almost all were FQs in colors I was woefully short on for my scrappies. So not exactly a "need", since they aren't for a specific project, but not exactly a "want" either.

I did spend a little more than I would have liked on quilting related things I needed, like threads and stabilizers when I was gifted an embroidery machine for my birthday, full bolts of W&N and interfacing at 70% off, and the like, but those should last me at least a year or two before I have to restock, and will serve me well to finally get more UFOs completed.

Overall, I am pretty pleased with how I did on my moratorium this year. I will be committing to another year. The ultimate goal is to get all my stash down to a single bookshelf one way or another!

PaperPrincess 12-23-2018 07:13 PM

i did pretty well with the pre-holiday sales at my LQS. I got some backing fabric, $5 a yard, so a really good deal and I even think I know which quilt I'm going to use it on. I also got a yard of fabric at a thrift store, but used it immediately. I made a gift bag & posted it in the pictures forum.
Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!!

Conchalea 12-28-2018 05:33 AM

I’ve started the thread for the 2019 Moratorium. I hope this link works:

Ready for another year of using our stash & revisiting all the fabric we’ve bought because we loved it!
