How does everyone try to stick with their moratorium when the summer State Shop Hops are going on? Ugh....the sales! The prizes!

I either don't go, to avoid the temptation OR I evaluate each piece I pick up to determine if I REALLY REALLY WANT AND NEED IT. It's amazing how often I put the piece back.

From reading all of y'all that are going to sales, that I am the last hold-out. I haven't bought any fabric of any kind, except for that "full sized" fitted sheet for my bed that was mislabeled by the thrift shop and was really a queen sized one. It's now somewhere in the stash.

And, I've made dozens of baby quilts since January, all from the bins, boxes and piles of my stash. If I can do it, so can y'all! So, let's avoid all those sales! :)

happylab 05-30-2018 04:02 PM

I went to my LQS and only paid for a w/h holder and signed up for a quilt retreat in September. The quilt retreat is only 20 minutes away from me, and I can go home each night, if I like. I put down 1/4 of the payment today. I’m so excited about. I’m really trying not go to LQS and not buy fabric. I’m also getting into making quilt tops from my stash and scraps.

Battle Axe 05-31-2018 03:25 AM

Unfortunately.....or not....I'm going to fall off the wagon. My dear friend and quilting mentor is moving and into a much smaller space. If I helped clean her apt. would I be able to take all the fabric she doesn't want?????????????????????? Are you KIDDING? I know there are 4 bolts of pink. Does anyone do breast cancer quilts???

Then to make life interesting, the father blue bird died in a storm, and now the mother has disappeared too. I have 5 babies which require 2-3 hour feedings of meal worms on a tweezer. They were 40 hours without food, but I think I've got them all tanked up. All are eating, all are pooping and singing their rendition of "Feed Me, Feed Me!"

redstilettos 05-31-2018 04:30 AM

Oh Gosh BA....that is an undertaking. I'm not sure I'd be energized enough to do it. Of course, looking at the helpless ones I'd probably do the same. You're a kind person!

And as far as your friend goes? You aren't shopping with money, so I say it isn't shopping. Take all your little arms can handle and then go back for more. LOL

MadQuilter 05-31-2018 08:35 AM

You are a good soul, Battle Axe. Taking care of the babies sounds like a dedicated chore. We hear so much negativity in the world - I am always glad to come here and see the upside of humanity.

My BFF and I are going to go to the Reno Quilt and Sewing Expo so we'll see what I'll come home with. I can always get thread - We ALWAYS NEED thread. And my BFF doesn't have much stash. I can live vicariously through her. lol

Tonight I get to meet a quilty friend for dinner. She's a quilt judge in town for the fair judging. It will be nice because we get to meet the husbands too. I am sure looking forward to tonight.

Teen 05-31-2018 09:37 AM

Oh..Battle Axe....that is so sweet...I'd love to see a pic of your Foster peeps and so glad they are doing good.

MadQuilter....have a wonderful time at the fair and lunch with your friend. I think quilt shows should be exempt from moratorium since they are special events and some of that stuff can't be found but at shows. It's part of the experience.....

Joann's is having a BOGO sale right now so I am going to buy a new rotary cutter and get a second one free. Mine is on its last leg and almost death defying when replacing blades. It's time to replace it. Not getting anything else....cross my heart....lol..

SillySusan 06-02-2018 05:52 PM

Oops! After bragging about not buying fabric since January... I'm ashamed to admit ... I fell off the wagon today. Woe is me!! :( I friend "invited" me to go to her church's attic sale. I ended up buying 2 big packages of batting and a queen size cotton sheet (beautiful shade of lilac) . The sheet will be made into Pack-N-Play sheets so it may not count... And the batting really isn't fabric so maybe I'm safe. What do you think? Does my record still stand? :)

PaperPrincess 06-03-2018 05:01 AM

Susan, I think you can retain your tiara! Sounds like you used great restraint.
Battle Axe you are amazing! I remember dealing with 8 puppies that were rejected by their mother. Hectic time, but they should fledge pretty quickly.
I am happy to say I had zero fabric purchases in May. I even had a gift card that i used on a ruler.

oksewglad 06-03-2018 08:44 AM

That shop hop fabric...I bought less than 2yards of it...Had though of getting 3 yds of the one but only got half of that...so at least I toned done the purchase! now what to do with it...

Teen 06-03-2018 01:38 PM

Escaped Joann's with only rotary cutters and blades BOGO.... They were unboxing newly received designer fabric bolts.....just walked on by....phew!!

We all done good!!

Darcyshannon 06-03-2018 09:25 PM

I have not been tempted by any of my “oh, I think my LQS will have something that works better” as I prepare fabric for an exchange. I just have worked with my stash and said to self I am sure it will work out fine.

I am am worried about having enough of a theme fabric. I saw lots of sellers of it online and won’t buy unless I NEED it if running out while finishing quilt.

So hard. However, I just prepped 19 F8 all from stash in B/W prints.

Good for you, Darcy! It's so hard to have resistance to all those temptations out there! :)

Teen 06-04-2018 06:41 PM

Well done, Darcyshannon..... I have dug into my outrageously expansive polka dot stash for a new project as well as my stripes and solids, which were equally getting out of control. My sewing nook looks like a bomb exploded bubbles...lol...

MadQuilter 06-05-2018 09:14 AM

I am going to the Reno Quilt and Sewing Expo. Hope I can be strong......

petthefabric 06-05-2018 04:09 PM

In preparation for the grand moment when my cast was removed, I've been planning fabric for projects. Today, it happened, the cast was replaced by a removable brase. So I went to the LQS for the background....and that's all I bought. The had the most unique and fabulous butterfly print. I walked past it. I'm so proud of myself. It took a lot of will power to have self-control not to buy and buy and buy. The cost isn't important. The point is I first shopped my stash, then bought only what was needed to fill in. YEH!

Good for you, Pet... for not falling prey to more buying fabric for your stash and, even more important, for recovering enough to get rid of that cast!! :)

Irishrose2 06-05-2018 07:35 PM

We need a like button. I, too, say good for you on both counts. Casts are wonderful because they facilitate healing, but getting them off is lovely, too.

PaperPrincess 06-06-2018 10:34 AM

Pet, congrats on the next step in your healing process!! I've actually been sewing! keeps me out of the stores...

rryder 06-07-2018 02:05 PM

Well, I had a slight fall in the form of a drive by fabric drop off thanks to my Mom who passed a very nice white fitted sheet with a rip in it my way. i’ve already removed the elastic and ripped it into flat pieces. i also used most of it as rhe front and back for a whole cloth doodle quilt since I’ve been wanting to do one of those. So really, only a few long strips and a couple of squares were added to my stash.... and it did give me an excuse to start something new instead of digging something out of my ginornous UFO pile...:D

Rob

SillySusan 06-07-2018 05:58 PM

Rob, this doesn't count. You didn't go out to buy any fabric. You can't help it if someone gives you some... :)

Teen 06-07-2018 06:28 PM

Petthefabric....good news on the cast....take it slow and don't overdue. Excellent restraint, too!

Madquilter.....enjoy the expo...those are so hard to not buy.

Rob....I've wanted to try a doodle art quilt too. I like the one where that gal LA her doodle and then used fabric paint...amazing. Have fun and share your results...

I ran ran out of light gray so I bought only one yard yesterday. Nothing else....LQS had some end of bolt packets made up...polka dots....OMG!!! She said she thought of me when she packaged them and almost set them aside for me. So sweet of her but...... Help me, please!

SillySusan 06-07-2018 10:23 PM

OK, Teen, help is here! Breathe deeply... In... Out. Slowly, Teen, very slowly... Breathe deeply again... You can do it. Your don't need more polka dots. It's ok... You'll be fine... You can just turn around and leave the LQS without any more stuff to add to your stash. ... Just keep breathing...

Did that help? :)

happylab 06-08-2018 06:38 PM

I have not bought any fabric lately. I’m trying to finish 2 swaps and a few ufo’s. I know I will need to buy some fabric to finish up 2-3 projects, but i’m Putting it on the back burner now. I signed up for a retreat in September and hopefully I will compete 3-4 ufo quilt tops. Then they will be quilted and done this year.

Irishrose2 06-08-2018 07:41 PM

I ordered two yards of fabric today, but it will be sewn and leave the house as soon as it arrives. The last student I tutored privately is graduating and going to college on a cycling scholarship. I'm so proud of him and need a special gift. Fabric.com has cyclers in various 'poses' on fabric. I have black and gray for the flange and cuff, so I will use some stash. One of his lessons was to make a 'taco' pillowcase. (There's no sense learning to read if you can't transfer the words to action), so pillowcases made with that way will mean something to him.

Teen 06-09-2018 05:29 PM

Sillysusan....thank you...much better now...lol!

good job, happylab... Your are staying so focused.

irishrose......that will be a cool quilt and gift. Can't wait to see what you do with that theme fabric. I have a hard time with ideas for themed stuff....

Irishrose2 06-09-2018 05:41 PM

He won't get a quilt. I can hardly keep up with family members. He will get 2 pillowcases. If his mother wants to commission a quilt after she sees the fabric, we'll talk. The student needs nothing and will be thrilled to get pillowcases with cyclists on them.

Teen 06-09-2018 05:56 PM

Oh..sorry...I misread....I have quilt on the brain..lol! Really thoughtful sentimental gift. I've never made one so I'd like to see them when completed, if willing.

Darcyshannon 06-09-2018 07:28 PM

I bought Approx one yard combined total of fabric while on trip. I will use in a current project.

Conchalea 06-10-2018 02:30 AM

Darcy Shannon, your purchase qualifies for the “travel exemption!” Plus, if you already have plans to use it in a current project, it wasn’t purchased to place in your stash. So you’re fine & haven’t technically fallen off the fabric moratorium wagon.

Battle Axe 06-10-2018 07:57 AM

My wonderful quilting mentor is moving to the southern end of the state to a smaller place with her family. I am so fortunate in that she is gifting me Huge HUGE boxes of fabric. I will never shop again!!!!!!!!!

Congrats to you Battle Axe... All that fabric and you didn't even fall off the moratorium wagon!! Enjoy!! :)

And this what I still have to put away. I've put away two boxes already. One box is pure solids. Most are big prints, some Jinny Beyer. Oh the fun!! But I lose my friend and running buddy. Snifff.

Teen 06-10-2018 01:49 PM

Oh goodness....quite the haul, Battle Axe!!! That is awesome and so generous of her. Sad for you both that she's moving away, though. I see FaceTime and visits in your future...

Conchalea 06-15-2018 03:46 AM

Well, I jumped off the moratorium train last weekend & ordered a kit from Craftsy. It’s the Quiltworx pattern Cactus Flower with fabric to make a table runner. It was just under half price & even with tax & shipping cost $50.50. On the Quiltworx site the pattern alone is $28.50! The kit has 5 different batik fabrics, in colors I might not have chosen to put together. So I’m moving out of my comfort zone with this one. It isn’t going into stash-I’ll start it after I complete the two quilts that need quilting & binding. So I’m climbing back aboard.

Teen 06-15-2018 11:00 AM

I'm heading back to Idaho Sunday and the land of some of my fav LQS. I have nothing on my list to buy but I'm stopping in anyway...lol!! I may pick up their 2018 RBR's..... I love the theme this year and a music quilt is on my bucket list.... Excemption city!!! Woohoo!

Teen, I’m claiming a delayed travel exemption! I took a 1400 mile ride to northeast Texas April 28-May 4. I didn’t buy any fabric AT ALL (no room on the motorcycle!) so I’m using that exemption now.

retiredteacher09 06-15-2018 05:36 PM

I bought 16.5 yards of fabric today from a quilt store in central Minnesota. They had a special buy for the MN Guild quilt show. Buy 2 yards, get 1 free. I saved $10 on that deal! I also bought 2 fabrics of 6 yards each that were 50% off. I am claiming an exemption because it was tied into the quilt show which I attended for the first time and I am 80 miles from home. :)
