I am working on a project that involves applique and don't really know what possessed me, but I decided on HAND-applique. Shaking head in disbelief. Now that I am 2 blocks into the project, it is moving at a decent pace but still....it will be a long process. SIGH! I also decided that some of the tiny pieces won't be following the insane shapes indicated. Some bulges will be more gradual and some curves less curvy. It still looks good in the end AND it has a chance of getting done. lol

Drove right by the LQS today...zoom...... Then, I stopped and bought a corn dog (I know they are trash but I Just had to have one immediately ).... So...fat for fabric. Just a different kind of stash...lol!

I need to adjust my moratorium to include anything quilt-related! In the past month, I've fallen off the fabric moratorium (but I'm back on the wagon). I've now fallen into the gadgets, notions and "things to make things better" category. I went to a quilt show and purchased the Martelli machine binding system (yesterday), I ordered in-line the TrueSharp2 power rotary blade sharpener and the back-brace thingie from Nancy's Notions. I have spent not only my 2017 Christmas money, but also my anticipated 2018 Christmas money!
I do many charity quilts and they want machine binding. I've been so dissatisfied with how my machine binding looks after I've spent so much time and effort piecing and quilting......so I have been frustrated with my binding. I have looked around and am impressed with the Martelli system. So.....I will make it work and it will be better than I can do...but it appears to be time-consuming and tedious. But, it's worth it to me if they come out better. The rotary cutter sharpener is to save my sanity and my meager attempt to make those blades last longer by continuing to cut when they are dull. If I can get a little more use out of them, this will be worth it to me. Lastly, I need to be constantly reminded (by myself) to sit up straight, shoulders back, suck in stomach, etc. So.....I've been looking at that back brace thing for years. It's on its way and I'll will wear it..... So, now that I've put all the justifications....I still feel pretty bad about all this spending. But, that's it for the year......no additional fabric.....no additional notions.......and I'm focusing on the spirit of gratitude for all I have by sewing up a storm! Thanks for letting me confess......hopefully I'm not the only one who's over-spent a bit! I don't understand why the charities that are receiving your quilts want machine bindings. I tried to do them in order to save time, but they were bad. I just couldn't get them to look even near nice. Those people are even sillier than I am! |

I'm going to have to bail on the Moratorium. My dear quilting friend is moving and will be down sizing. She wants me to take all her non-moving fabric. She has tons and it is all good stuff. Oh happy day. My place is going to be a MESS.

Battle Axe: I agree with Silly Susan. I get fabric from two groups where I volunteer and I don't consider that falling off the wagon.
However, you are making me jealous. I want to come and help you sort out all of that fabric! LOL! |
Battle Axe...such a nice thing your friend is doing. I'll be more than happy to take your new stash so you can remain in the moratorium.....really, it's truly no problem to make that sacrifice for you. :D

Our Monday Group brings in discards to share. I rescued about 3 yds. More artistic style. Can't wait (for cast removal). Yeh, this was rescuing, & I'm very conservative about it.

Oksewglad: I'd love a road trip to Indiana to help Battle Axe sort her fabric! Lol! I can just imagine my youngest son's response if I asked him to price a rental car for me through his work because I was going to Indiana to play with fabric. :)

I just ordered some Invisafil thread. One of my quilty friends who is a quilt judge and a recipient of many awards was using it on a quilt at our last retreat. WOW, that 100 wt thread really just buries into the ditch. With ditch stitching being somewhat important but also tedious, it helps to have a supporting thread.
Another thing that hopped into my shopping cart was a thimble display case with a glass front. My collection of thimbles has outgrown the shelves I currently have and they are scattered here and there. Now I can go collect some more. Hey - at least none of it was fabric! |
Nice purchases.... I'm going to look into that thread. Is that like mono-poly thread just a different name? And, please a pic of your thimble collection. I'd love to see it. I have one thimble. Lol!

Invisifil is a thread made by Wonderfil. It is 100 wt. polyester and comes in many colors. It is very nice to work with and not nearly as pricey as 100 wt. silk. Rob |
Both of my newest ( baby quilt) projects used all stash fabrics. I’ve had that green/ blue flannel for probably 5 years- maybe longer. The backing on the bunny quilt also has been around for years. ( the bunny panel was a vacation purchase specifically for this gift ) Nice to finally use them. Used quite a few ( old) flannel pieces for the appliqué
pushed about 4 yards of fabric from the shelves. And didn’t have to shop at all. The panel purchase didn’t add to my shelves, went straight into a quilt. I’m enjoying shopping my stash. :) |

It is okay to buy fabric that you have a plan for using and do use. Really, it is okay to buy fabric. This is just for those of us who know they need to get it under control. Pointing finger at me.
Anyway, I am getting ready for my first boom exchange and I am taking all fabric from stash. However, I did buy two yards of beautiful fabric on Etsy for the back of the completed quilt. It will be a Halloween quilt suited for a tween age girl. I found old Pumpkin Party from Alexander Henry and thought it would make a gorgeous swath in the back. So my goal is to only buy fabric for backing, sashing and setting. I will need to start getting quilts made and out of my home before I can buy anymore just because. This is super hard. I may need to resort to trading. I have lots of yardage of batiks etc. |

Hey back :D Is the kona fabric still on sale? I am looking for some more kona black and Snow White.
Does it help to cut fabric into strips and squares without a project in mind?

Cool. My new display case came in yesterday (already!!!) so when I have it hanging and all my treasures transferred, would you like me to send you my current display? I think it holds 40 - each in its own little cubby. It does not have a glass front though. Let me know - I'd be happy to pass it on.

Thanks, Martina, but I will pass...my display boxes also have no glass fronts and I'd rather have one to keep the dust out! Imagine that!
The one I ordered holds 180 thimbles. It has rows instead of cubbies which is better for my collection. I have some that are taller or wider than the normal thimble. The glass front is a wonderful addition. |

Does it help to cut fabric into strips and squares without a project in mind? https://www.easyquiltingcorner.com Cutting scraps: I suppose it doesn't really matter. My rule of thumb is cutting fabric where I use the most of fabric available. As you start stashing different size precuts, you'll have lots of pattern options for strips, squares, and rectangles....which are what I precut mine into. And, all different sizes to boot... Only one size precut scrap in my stash is targeted for a specific pattern. The rest, I just keep, stashing away awaiting inspiration. |
I haven’t bought anything in the last 2 weeks. I’m currently working on scrappy 6” 9-patches for a swap. I’m just beginning. I’ve gone through 1/3 of my scraps. I’m not sure how much more I have to cut. I need to sew lots more, I need 100 blocks for this swap. I’m looking forward to getting it done and swapping the project. I think I have my pattern figured out. I’ll wait and see. I’m trying to use only my stash for this project. It won’t be done for a while.
I’m also working on the fall star swap blocks. I’m making 25 blocks in fall colors, all of which will be from my stash. I have 5 blocks cut out and need to cut out 5 more and just sew them. That’s my weekend project. |
Happylab, I am working on the 9P swap too. What are your plans for the blocks? I am realizing what a great way to use up fabric not earmarked for a special project.

I received my batting yesterday for the SBS so I prepped it for LA. I started this project with 14/yds of just the focal fabric and I have 3/4 yd remaining. I used the whole bolt so I am stoked!! I have no idea how much yardage for the other colors but I really wanted to burn through this one bolt. The balance of remaining from other fabrics are good for binding SBS and mixers for other projects. Yea for me.... I've had that bolt since Sept 2016.
SBS going to LA next week... |
Congratulations, Teen, on using up the majority of the bolt and the lovely quilt top.
|
Beautiful top, Teen! Congratulations on getting it (and that bolt ) finished!

I went to Joann’s today to buy backing for my Boxes of Strings. It was on sale & I bought only what is needed for the back. I also bought thread (1/2 price) & admit to falling off the wagon a little. In the remnants bin I found a panel that reminds me of Yellowstone, which I miss every day, so it jumped in my bag! But I hope to use it soon & I’ll use the other fabric to complete Boxes of Strings, so neither goes into stash. Since all the fabric in Boxes came from stash, as did all fabric for the 19th Mystery, I’m ahead of the game.
|
You did good in my opinion, Conchalea. I went to Joann's today, too, and had an equally successful shopping trip. I did not go crazy only buying glue sticks and basting spray; however, I did buy a pattern book....the cutest applique birds blocks...started a block tonight to make a pillow for my future Idaho neighbor. She made me a birthday cake when I was there, which was so sweet. She's an awesome baker so this does not bode well for my hips...lol..
|
Ha ha, Teen! I hear you. My younger daughter is a great baker. I both love it & hate it. Fortunately she takes most of her experiments to her workplace. Let those folks put on the pounds!
With sales, I only spent a little over $17 at Joann’s, so it wasn’t a very expensive trip. More $$ to spend next trip! Patterns-hmmm. I have several on my wish list, plus some quilt kits. My quilt bucket list keeps expanding. |
I'm planning on a little fall. Catch me if you can! All Iowa shop hop fabric is officially for sale on Friday. I really like the postcard fabric...I like to have some of this in stash to use in hostess gifts when friends and family come to call. All of MrOk and my siblings plus 3 of our 4 kids are out of state with Iowa roots so they may get something Iowa made when they come in July. Here's a link to the fabric.

I’m planing on putting 1/2 squares triangles between most blocks with blue and cream/white fabric. Someone on the thread had posted a pic of my idea. I 1st saw the idea on Pinterest. I really like the design and layout of this pattern. I’m also making a block of all blocks I send out so I have double the blocks. I know I need more than 100 blocks. Plus I want to enlarge the pattern to fit a king size bed. I’m still debating if I will keep the quilt or not. May give it to a niece. I’ll see how it turns out.
Do you have any plans yet?

I’m finishing up one swap and stared 2 more swap blocks and all blocks will come from my stash. I really geared up on getting these done in the next few weeks. My #1 priority.
I do need to go to my LQS and p/u my bom and maybe some fabric for my final border on Judy’s mystery train #18. I have the top together, but thinking I want the final border to be a long strip verses just 2.5” squares put together. that purchase s/h make me fall off the wagon, since it’s to finish a project. Yea. |
