As usual, the posts on this thread are a huge inspiration to keep plugging along on my own UFO's. Thanks to all for sharing--I get such pleasure from reading about everyone's progress, and especially seeing pictures of finished UFO's.

I can finally claim two UFO's done! My reversible Double Irish Chain and my Ohio Stars (posted on this thread) are all now one completed, reversible quilt. The Ohio Stars has been a UFO for at least 15 years, and the Double Irish Chain started as a bunch of 4 patch leaders and enders from about 3-4 years ago. Between design changes and issues with my machine, I almost thought I would never get it finish, lol!

I also have my Oklahoma Twister quilt top pieced. It was a small lap-sized floppy, but I decided to make it bigger, so I ripped off the borders, made more blocks, and enlarged it form 9 blocks to 20. Unfortunately, the floppy was stored in a box unwrapped, and the extra fabric was in a ziplock, so there is a noticeable color difference on the neutral fabric. I'm crossing my fingers that it is just dust, and will come out. I have it soaking in some oxyclean now.

For my next UFO, I pulled out what was supposed to be 12" pinwheels in solid black and a lovely brown print. It was just a sketch, a partially pieced sample block, and a huge stack of cut triangles.

While it looked okay, I wasn't thrilled with the black/brown combo, nor with the idea of giant pinwheels. I decided to cut up the brown triangles, and use a different brown fabric I picked up earlier this week to make smaller pinwheels, so I'm working on these.

I haven't settled on a layout yet, but I'm thinking I may set them on point. The black triangles are back in the UFO pile until I can come up with an idea for them..

Great job, JJ... Your smaller pinwheel block reminds of the block called Broken Dishes. Maybe googling that will help with a design layout. I like the new block colors....very cool..

Rose_P 02-15-2018 09:52 PM

Facepalm: I just remembered why that disappearing 4-patch became a UFO. I had figured out that if I made one more row of those easy blocks I would have a quilt that would fit a queen bed nicely. I just didn't feel like doing it at that time (6 years ago). Of course, now that it's finished in its original skimpy size, that will never happen. Sigh. I'm mentioning this as a hint if others are looking at something they put aside, to ask yourself some questions before leaping right in. Whatever stopped you before might not seem so daunting now, but you do have to remember what the heck it was.

It's nice to pop in here and see all the great work that gets done. Way to go and keep it going! It's inspiring! I have to admit I seem to have created another UFO last week. It's a center medallion and I don't know what I want to put around it yet. Someday it will speak to me. Meanwhile, I made a little quilt from some stray blocks that were given to me. Not a UFO of mine, but it seems like progress of a sort, and it will be donated to pay forward a nice gift of fabric and stray blocks from someone on Nextdoor dot com.

I have several more UFO's that need doing, but what is beckoning is a scrap project that I can easily justify because in addition to making quilts and UFO's I've been a regular scrap factory for several years. In addition to that, the Nextdoor pal gave me lots of blue scraps to go with my own and there's a quilt hiding in there somewhere, I just know it. I promise to get back to the UFO's eventually.

oksewglad 02-15-2018 11:13 PM

RoseP, I love your thinking and I so understand, those quilts lurking in the scraps! I finished the little mini flimsy tonight and when I all finished with it, it will be a completed UFO. Those little 4P (from gifted fabric) have been hanging around for at least 3 years. And guess what I found some more 4P's the same size while digging tonight. I'll try to get that one fun and done, too. Not sure how many there are in this batch.

Teen I have used EQ for several years and enjoy using it. I did not upgrade to EQ8 as I felt I have what I want in the EQ7 program. I know I don't use it to its full potential.

JJB...Yes we need to rethink the original project and decide if we want to continue in that direction.

cannyquilter 02-16-2018 01:25 AM

Happylab thanks for the heads up re VQW. I'm moving my sewing room this weekend so won't get much machine sewing done but I have a Christmas decoration from two years ago which just needs hand sewing plus I could work on my QAYG samples quilt (over 5 years on the go but who's counting).

Teen 02-16-2018 09:52 AM

Mystery clue comes out tomorrow so going to work on that. Need to get my taxes organized for next week's' appointment and get us ready for a short 2-day trip to Laughlin, NV. Getting away for a couple of days with BFF's...gamble, eat, and be merry.....did I say gamble? Show me the money...mama needs a new pair of shoes (and any sewing notion available)

cherrybsixty 02-16-2018 07:56 PM

I love VQW, thanks happylab for reminding us of it. I got lots of work to do. I haven't been able to sew for a while around here. All three of my domestic went down at the same time. But two of them went to the OSMG and their stitch is as pretty as ever. I can get back on track. so very glad that I will be able to sew.

I have a Feb. UFO finish!

Hey all,
I found a piece that just needed to be bound... It has lingered on the UFO stack for about a year because I couldn't figure out what to do with it. It was an attempt to do a whole cloth mini out of a flimsy slinky and slippery satin that came from my grandmother's house. I used the framework of Lisa Calle's design from her whole cloth mini class on Iquilt. Because of the slippery nature it was very difficult to work with, almost impossible to square up for binding and I decided to just finish it by overcasting the edges and calling it a sample. Any way, it is done and no longer on the UFO pile YAY! very difficult to photo also because it's so shiny---note to self, never ever use this kind of material again without heavily stabilizing it first LOL!

Wow Rob! Nice work on your "sample"! Neat that you now have a pretty treasure from Grandma's stash~

Sync 02-17-2018 11:21 AM

Wow, nice work Rob. Mini or sample it looks great.

Alletierre is done!

You know it is a big quilt when DH can’t hold it up without losing the borders—they are straight, no scallops.

En Provence is basted, but the train got me and now we are on a side track doing Judy’s mystery. Not to speak of the gawking delay watching my neighbor’s new house go in. Oh, dear, another one arrives Monday.

Teen 02-17-2018 03:52 PM

Gorgeous finish, Krista!! Lots of work in that thing....

Rob... Please? Seriously? Geesh you are so talented. This sample is superb. Great finish..a bit of grandma even better...

worked on on the mystery today. Now I gotta feed the DH and work on taxes. Have a beautiful evening everyone...

cannyquilter 02-17-2018 04:05 PM

Rob beautiful work. Krisb really like that one.

Sync 02-17-2018 05:29 PM

Kris, your Allietare looks fantastic.

retiredteacher09 02-17-2018 05:34 PM

Rob and Krisb: Great finishes!

Awesome job, Rob!! That slinky, slippery stuff is definitely challenging. Hmm, that reminds me of another UFO, that may well BE a UFO because of the slinky, slippery stuff!!

I LOVE the methods that Lisa Calle teaches!! I've done a couple of small wholecloth wall hangings using her methods!
Again, that's a great finish!!

D.Henson 02-18-2018 08:24 AM

Rob, great quilting! beautiful reminder of your grandmother. Very cool!

Krisb, super finish!! My Allietare is still in pieces. UFO for sure! On my list to complete though.

Jane Quilter 02-18-2018 08:54 AM

great quilting Rob

joe'smom 02-18-2018 09:09 AM

JJBlaine , congratulations on your reversible finish!

Rob, that's wonderful quilting!

Kris, congratulations on finishing Allietare! I really loved putting that one together. Your looks great.

rryder 02-18-2018 11:49 AM

Thanks for the sweet comments ya'll.

Kris - your Allietare is beautiful! Congratulations on finishing it!

Rob

Krisb 02-18-2018 03:53 PM

And Rob, your whole cloth is way cool. Don’t even really like sewing apparel with fabric that slinky.

cherrybsixty 02-18-2018 04:34 PM

Rob, please never tired of receiving complements because I think your work is gorgeous and the 'grandma's silk whole cloth sampler is awesome. Thank you for sharing with us your beautiful work.

Trying my best to be a part of VQW and get some things done, but, life keep playing it's part, at least the weather is nice. Thank GoODness there can always be a tomorrow. Have a good evening.

Teen 02-18-2018 04:50 PM

Yesterday, worked on the mystery...today, sewed the top together. Just need to do borders...still thinking about that. Gonna be gone for 2 days but will hit it when I return..

QuilterMomma 02-20-2018 09:57 AM

Love the wholecloth mini Rob, yeah that slippery fabrics is not easy to quilt on. On my recent formal gown, I used Bethanne Nemeshe's beaded binding on it, hand work, but looks good.

Alletaire is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually got to quilt on longarm and finished a quilt, just needs binding to count. Will be this month I am hoping. We shall see.

QuilterMomma 02-21-2018 10:44 AM

A binding I will go, a binding I will go, hi ho the dairy o a binding I will go.

QM, I know exactly how you feel about that binding, I have four tops that are sandwiched and domestic quilted and waiting for the binding. Sometimes that alone can be a challenge. Thu, I did finish the doll quilt yesterday, so that means I need to start on the other three. I didn't get what I wanted completed during VQW, but, I did get a start. Working on a UFO for today, and hopefully it will be a finish for February. Have a productive day everyone.

petthefabric 02-22-2018 08:38 AM

Doing the binding isn't my favorite either. Once I get it quilted, I'm so close to the end and want it finished, I make myself do it right then so I can enjoy it.

Ok, this must be a productive day cause I did finish that binding on that UFO that was started in the fall of 2016 and held all of last year waiting to be domestic quilted, so that was completed yesterday and today the binding was completed. Have a look see, and then on to other one waiting to be DQ'd. Sorry, I can't show the pix of the completed bind charity quilt, need to learn to delete some pix off the file. Maybe in another pix later on, but it is completed.

Sync 02-22-2018 03:26 PM

Congrats on the finish

oksewglad 02-22-2018 03:46 PM

Good for you cherry! Now handstitching is one of my favorite parts of making a quilt. Something contemplative about slowing down and finishing a project for me.

Rumor has it that instead of getting a finish...Kristakz has created a new UFO out of stash fabric...but if it hasn't been laying around long, maybe it is still considered a WIP, right now:D

Ack, I've been outted! LOL
Working on keeping it from UFO status. I found a quilt in my pile that is almost the right size to pair with it (and at least it's the right shape this time). A couple of new borders on the UFO quilt (which I plan to work on at my sew day tomorrow), and I should have a back & top ready to go on the longarm.

For those not on the Fabric Moratorium thread - I made this lovely backing for a quilt. Back is 95x95" - but when I double checked the size of the top, it turned out to be 91x106" rather than the 96x96" that I thought it was. I completely forgot that I turned that square quilt into a rectangle. And that it apparently originally finished at 72x72".

Thank you, Oksewglad, it really is finished, I machine sew the binding and I worked some more quilting in also. I just couldn't get the finished pix to download this afternoon. Maybe another time I can get loaded.

Kristakz, that's a gorgeous piece you are working on now.

I got the pix to load in the Picture section, "Finished Charity UFO."

Congratulations on your cute finish, cherrybsixty! Your quilt looks soft and cuddly.

MadQuilter 02-24-2018 11:24 AM

For those of you who are fighting with the binding (or just the thought of doing binding), have you tried flanged binding? I find it much easier to do (all by machine) because the flange gives me a clear line along which to sew the binding down. This method is best used for utility quilts - not show quilts.

Great finishes, everyone. I am actually working on my BFF's UFO. She finished the top and sandwiched but she is a total newbie at the actual quilting. So I volunteered. Shaking head since I have a gazillion of my own to finish. But, what are friends for, right?

And failure #2 :(

Added borders to what I thought was a 79" square quilt (I measured it - on one side apparently), and now it's 89x94" to the outside of the blue border. Way too close to the 95" quilt top to look good - plus it's not square (it was supposed to have a 4" black border after the blue).

Back to the drawing board once again. I ripped out all those borders to try one more time.

I may never do another double sided quilt after this.

Oh my gosh, Krista, all that ripping! But what a fascinating quilt. Is there a pattern name?

Thank you. There is no pattern name (or pattern), although I've been calling it "Rainbow Explosion". It is an original design.
