I had a UFO finish for August, after thinking I had no UFOs! It was an art quilt I started a few years ago but put away when it wasn't working as I envisioned. I changed it up to be a scene with flowers & a windmill & gave it to a good friend I visited at the end of August. She will hang it in her stair landing so she'll see it each trip up & down the stairs. I tried posting it from my phone, but couldn't resize for the format here. I'll have to send it to my computer to do that. I'll post it later.

Lovely stitching, WMUTeach! HQ is very difficult for my hands and so shy away from it. Once in a while will use it on a mini quilt, but that's about all I feel I can do.
A UFO finish for September. I found a 40 x 40 pastel top complete with backing, batting and binding. Used a panto for the second time and got it done...took me longer to get that figured out..so hard to get used to quilting without looking at the quilt. Had a meeting last night, but got the binding on afterwards. Now to work today. |
Question. If you get a unfinished quilt from someone and you finish it does that count as my ufo or someone else's?
|
I would count it, Queen....a UFO is A UFO when transferred. Lol.. That's my reasoning.
I found a LA'er so I hope to get my 2 quilt tops recently finished prepped and delivered in a couple of weeks. I stored them when I finished them but I can hear the whining noises coming from the corner of workshop... |
Beautiful finish wmuteach!
Rob |
Yup...a UFO is a UFO.
Great to find a LA'er in your new locale, Teen. |
Maryb, I found the pattern but it does not have a name of the block on it. It was paper pieced. I will contact my quilt leaders and see if they have a name for the block. As I recall it was a very easy paper pieced block.
|
Mary B119, I posted a message on my quilt guild site and Ta-Da, I have the name! It is from a book call Scrap-Basket Sensations by Kim Brackett and the name of the quilt is "Picnic". I suspect that my guild leader took the basic block and redesigned it to be paper pieced. Kim's patterns are easy to follow, so if you can find a copy, you may find it a treasure chest of beautiful quilts.

Simple quick UFO finish this afternoon. Put binding on 2 potholders. I made them 18 months ago as my first practice project on the LA. I cut the piece into potholder sized pieces, then put a layer of insulbrite before the backing. Cut 2 strips of binding fabric from stash and voila..done. Now to find someone to gift them to...shouldn't be hard.

I got a lot of quilt blocks that I received from a lady on this board. I turned them into two quilts and donated them.

Congratulations, oksewglad, on your potholder finishes! Every finish, whether big or small, equals success.
Queenbarbiej: Congratulations on the finishes. They turned out very pretty. |

Thanks, retiredT...I even found a new home for them...yesterday a 20someting friend stopped by bringing a friend along on their way to a college friends get together. They each got a potholder! So sweet to think that C wants to hang out with a couple of old folks for an afternoon.

I had a finish for August. It was an art quilt I set aside a few years ago because it wasn't working as I originally visualized. If I can figure out how to resize the phone photo I'll post it here. It's a wall hanging featuring flowers & a windmill. Besides finishing a forgotten UFO, I used only stash fabrics in it, so it was a double win.
|
Congrats on your finish, Conchalea...would like to see it, too.
|
OK, I wish I could figure out this phone. I could resize on the I-phone but not on this android-type phone.

Forgotten UFO

I transferred my phone pix to my computer. I do know how to resize photos on my computer. The windmill blades were from a mistake on another quilt I made. I used a template to cut right angle triangles & left the fabric folded. The back of the fabric caused backwards triangles. When I laid out the pieces, my immediate thought was, what a great windmill they made!. So, the idea for the windmill was born. The flowers were smaller triangles from the same template. My friend is a lifelong biologist & always has lovely flowers so I thought it appropriate for her. She loved the bright green and the varied flowers. The small blue ones were some yarn scraps I coiled and sewed to the background fabric.

Fun quilt, Conchalea

I love your quilt, Conchalea! I’m also glad you figured out how to get a picture posted.

Thanks, all. It was fun to make the flowers & use left-over yarn for the metal work on the windmill.

I finally got several row-sets ironed. Hopefully, I can get the rows sewn and borders put on them within the next week. Wish me luck.
This one was almost 120" long.. I wacked off 24" and divided that in half and made two matching pillow cases.. Typical Around-The-Worlds with repeating prints... Scrappy Around-The-Worlds for my cousin's daughters (I have never met them :o ). One Diagonal with a "mis-count" that I did not find until the last row and I refused to take out and redo. It ended up with this in the final corner... Even with the "Ooops" factor, I got 7 done for August  ! The LA was surprised to see me waltz in with all of these.:p |
Motor...outstanding August finishes. I love all of them. I think you paid your LA's mortgage payment last month. Lol!!
great job! The backings are ready for my 2 tops but my batting is in the storage unit. Ugh! I thought it was in our workshop but..nope... I either dig it out of storage or buy some. Not sure yet.. I hate to buy when I have it in stash. |
Motorcyclemad: Way to go! All are very pretty.
|
Ok, so I did some "purging" in my sewing room so I could get in there. Shocking. I finished the binding on a quilt I had lingering since March for DGS. Looked at my list of what's next and dug out my Judy Neimeyer quilt Vintage Rose. It's gorgeous. Have the first 2 sets of units done. Took out 3 and 4 to work on. It's progress.
|
Good job, sewingitalltogether! Winter is coming and your GS will appreciate that finished quilt pretty soon...and room in the sewing room. Every step is a step toward completion!
Look at all those finishes, Motorcyclemad. Congratulations on a job well done. Last night got the backing sewn for my latest UFO, then I can get it on the LA later today. Will make the binding after quilting as I should be able to use the trims for binding. |

Three finishes for Sept, in order of age:
The oldest was started by my mother’s oldest sister, who was born in 1903. She made the Dresden Plates, but never appliquéd them or finished the top. 50’s? Found some mint green for the borders. Next oldest is Daddy’s Trees, which was started when my DD was in hospice in 1994. Designed the double folded ribbon border myself and thought I had invented something new, but not so. They are log cabin trees. Obviously a Christmas quilt The newest was started last winter. It is my version of the Northern Lights by Gudrun Erla. My lights have more colors and the “spears” added. And the back, which used all the leftovers. Now only have—-Jinny Beyer’s Moonglow, JN Amazon star, Dizzy Geese, another of Aunt Fannys’s unfinished tops (bubble gum pink pinwheels). and my DGN Desi’s weighted blanket and everything started will be done. The. We can begin s9me of the ten or so quilts planned. |
High 5 finish, Kris...Keep it up. It sounds like you've decided to take care of the UFO's and then start on new ones. Good for you. Wish I could be that disciplined.
|
Congratulations on your wonderful finishes!
|
Wow, Krisb, those are beautiful! You've been very productive & I congratulate you.
|
Conchlea-Congratulations on finishing your art quilt-I love the windmill!
Motorcyclemad- beautiful finishes, congratulations! Krisb- congratulations on all your finishes. That mint border was the perfect color for the dresden plates! Rob |
Krisb....your quilts are all so pretty. This batch was a sentimental journey for you. The dresdon is an heirloom and so cool that you finished it. Bravo for staying the course!!
|
Krisb,
These are all amazing. Keep up the good work! |

My scrappy Around the Worlds and Diagonal August finishes were out of these (5-1/2"). Over Labor Day, the same friend gave me a tote full of 6-1/2" squares. I told her that she was conspiring against me because I couldn't add them straight to the last batch she gave me...;) I finally got through this new set of fabric and was able to configure another "20" sets--all Queen sized. Ice said that if the material was together, it was a UFO. I guess my original count has increased by a factor of 4. :o |
Those are wonderful finishes, Kris. It sounds as though you have your UFOs well in hand!
Such a pretty quilt, Conchalea! |
Good morning everyone, yes I'm one of the train rider's that keep falling off the grid. So I am a strong lurker. But I do have a September finish. This particular UFO is only four years old. I started it in 2015 for my then Georgia football boy. He has now moved on to Nevada and tried his hand at high school football. I aim at getting it finished for him as a graduation present back in the early summer. But, 'life got in the way.' As it always does, but I got it done. Now, the backing is more interesting than the actual top. It is on it's way to the LA, who is my first cousin, she always keep me motivated toward my finishes for my children. So, 'out da door,' I go with that one and one more that has history of twenty years, that I finished a few months back. I didn't want to mention on this thread until I could get it long-armed. The story is too long to include in this post. When both are completed I will try to post the pix. I am really more excited than I am reacting on here for these two finishes. Glad to be a part of this motivating train just wish I could keep the pace more steady so I wouldn't be in this place. I really don't want to count my UFO's, just want to finish them.
Well, my fellow UFO'ers, I am truly headed to the LA, so happy sewing to everyone and make it a good one. Cherryb |
Good job, Cherry!! Looking forward to the pix!!
