I'm inspired by the finishes on this thread! So many pretty patterns & fabrics keep me motivated.

oksewglad 09-26-2019 11:20 PM

It looks like 11 days ago I put my UFO on the LA...this morning 2:00 am...I took it off. It took over 10 hours of quilting a panto on this 88 x 104 quilt...and ran out of the varigated thread I was using...was able to finish the last fill in row with another varigated that matched close enough. Tomorrow will cut binding...some from the backing...and sew it on. This one started sometime in late 2012. Time to get some sleep!

Bug Lady 09-27-2019 06:05 AM

oksewglad , You need your sleep to get your creative quilt juices going. Looking forward to see the quilt. Have a good rest. Karen

oksewglad 09-28-2019 03:42 PM

Ha ha Bug Lady! I just finished the last stitch of binding while watching FB game today. Too late to take it outside for photo and now going to rain tomorrow morning. Maybe later in the day for photo op. So delighted to have this one done. Now which one do I do next or do I reward myself and start a new project :shock::shock:

oksewglad 09-29-2019 06:40 PM

While sorting through things yesterday I couldn't find a home for yet another UFO. This one is a small wall hanging that was spray basted waiting for quilting. I have been looking at free pantographs and found one at Urban Elementz called Funky Feathers so tried it out. Put the it on the LA...just a bit of extra backing, but sneaked by. Before dinner started quilting, ate dinner, and took it off around 2:00 pm. Trimmed and ready for binding! This is too scary, I'm getting projects finished!

I pulled the quilt away from the spray basting when I put it on the LA. I didn't notice any problems, but wondering if the tension was a little off at my sharp points because of it.

oksewglad 10-01-2019 07:34 PM

Thanks, Teen..and now what will I do next! Well let's call another finish for me; that little wall hanging is bound and hanging on a quilt hanger! I have pictures but trying to figure out how to downsize from my phone. Now I have to work on some farm stuff...and the lawn is mowed.

cherrybsixty 10-05-2019 08:30 AM

Good morning UFO'ers, that four year grandson quilt has been delivered and I plan to take pix today and get them download to the thread as soon as possible. The 20 yo quilt has not made it back from the long-armer. She is in the middle of hosting a 70th birthday celebration for her DH. I maybe able to receive it on my return home. Looking forward to see how it completed. The five yo turned out great, now to get busy to quilt those other four UFO's that has history. Some ppl ask how can you wait that long. I say the lack of money, dis-content in the project, life just gets in the way. Just excuses sometimes but it happens

Have a happy Sew-Day, cherryb

retiredteacher09 10-05-2019 04:43 PM

Congratulations, cherrybsixty, on getting a UFO delivered. Looking forward to the pictures.

Teen 10-06-2019 08:40 AM

Good for you, cherry! Can't wait for pics!

cherrybsixty 10-07-2019 06:42 AM

Good morning UFO'ers, thanks Connie and Teen for you encouragement and as soon as I get to my editor-grand daughter to guide me in downloading the pix, I'll add them. Maybe the 20 yo quilt will be back from the LA. That's a story I've shared before but, willing to repeat. Now everyone have a good sew-day.

Happy Sew-Day---cherryb

Okay Ladies & Germs,
Since it was a holiday this past weekend, I went through my backing material for the last 7 moratorium tops I finished last month. This also will count towards the Moratorium Challenge I signed up for here on the board since I haven't bought anything. The tops are awaiting a trip to the LA--Yeah!

I located a "gifted" UFO I haven't seen in almost 11 yrs. Of course, I wouldn't find the one I was looking for :p . It was originally a BOM begun by my Fabric Angel (I love this woman!). She had it started, but doesn't really go for Stars all that much. After the first 4 months, she was going to trash it. I thought it was interesting. I asked her for it and she gave it to me. It is called "Bits and Pieces". I cannot remember who the designer is, but it is from 2008 (round about). It is comprised of variations of each monthly block in three sizes--6", 9" and 12". The kit supplied the material for the 12" blocks for each month, and you provide the material for the two smaller sizes. All of the squares are finished  . It just needs border material and assembly. The finished top calls for applique, which really is not me, so there will be a bit of "White Space" for the LA to play in. It is supposed to finish at 80x94, but I always want "more", so I will add about 20" all around. I am really excited about getting this one done, but I have to remind myself to focus on my "Moratorium-Oops" and a Saturday Sampler before I dive right in. :p

Wish me luck!

retiredteacher09 10-17-2019 04:55 AM

Motorcyclemad: Good luck on getting your goals accomplished.

oksewglad 10-17-2019 07:32 AM

Sewglad to hear of goals made and met!

The next UFO for me is a flying geese I started BEQ (Before Electric Quilt on my computer:D in other words 2010) I still have the graph paper it was created on. Have some other must do projects in the way so not sure how long this one will take me. The geese are in burgundy/browns/a little country blue that measure 3 x 6 when finished and will be set in a vertical strip setting....if I follow the earlier plan.

Dedemac 10-17-2019 02:23 PM

Sorry that I haven't been more supportive here, life has just been too crazy, I only work part time 3 days a week and help mom one or more days a week. I don't seem to get any UFO's finished or anything else for that matter. I have gotten a few quilts finished but they were either test quilt or new to send to friends. I have another test quilt to do and some stained glass to work on, but should be able to get to a UFO this month at least that's the goal!

It does look like others have been busy! Congratulations on all the finishes for September and October.

WMUTeach 10-17-2019 05:20 PM

I haven't check in for a while but I am here lurking and quilting. I think I mentioned a while back about hand quilting a special piece for a nephew and his bride. I hand pieced the rest of the needed blocks for the top. A new skill for me but went well. I battled layering it, got it done. Found the spray baste is not a good idea for hand quilting. Took the sandwich apart. Washed the back, new batting, swished the top about in warm water in my bath tub. Used the dryer on the back and pressed. Let the top air dry and pressed. Then a took all ta friend with a long arm and she/we basted it on the LA. Tonight I am back to hand quilting and it is going well. It must be done by the end of January, but with holidays and the end of a university semester and the beginning of another, it will demand that I quilt daily and not be lazy!. I'll post a photo when I get more quilting done.

Keep up your good work on clearing out your UFO's I am enjoying your posts.

happylab 10-17-2019 07:47 PM

Happy sewing/quilting everyone. I’ve been busy working on several project. Most of these are almost done. I’ll Post when they are done.

I was wondering if anyone would like to take over this thread next year. If not I will continue. I was just wondering If anyone would. I’m having issues posting my comments. Over 1/2 the time I will write a comment and when I hit send, a msg appears stating I did not sign in on the site. Even tho I did sign in. I enjoy this site. Just let me know if anyone would like to take over. Anyway, I really enjoy seeing all of the finished pics.

Dedemac 10-18-2019 11:43 AM

Happylab -I've the same problems a few times, it has to do with how long you have sat idle. Even when I am creating a response if I haven't refreshed the screen by going to the Advanced post area to preview my post it will dump me out. The bad thing is typing doesn't count as being active. I haven't figured out what the idle time length is. Does anyone know?

fmsmom 10-18-2019 12:57 PM

I have started working on my UFO and plan to finish it soon for my Grandson

rryder 10-18-2019 01:46 PM

Happylab, I had that problem for a while earlier this year, but seemed to resolve itself. Another problem that I run into is getting a message that says my reply can’t be posted because it’s too short.

So, has anyone found a solution to the kicking out problem? I see others being able to type long entries on this site. I just wonder why they aren’t kicked out. Just curious.

Has as anyone made a 1” (finished), blocks or postage stamp quilt? After you sew the segments, do you iron them, or wait until the very end to iron the seams down? I plan to start one next week.

I find it best to press as I sew. With that many seams, it is so easy to get a twisted seam allowance. I find this useful on all my quilts, not just the ones with smaller pieces.

I don't typically write long posts but, when I do, I get kicked out, too. The "auto-save" will sometimes help with that...or, type your post on a different program and just copy & paste.

I bow to you in all your greatness for starting a 1" postage stamp quilt! Yowza.... That's a lot of work but so awesome when done. Share your progress...and, like Oksewglad, I press as I go on my mini's. Just easier on accuracy for me, at least.

And Teen I find it so much more manageable to press as you go than to manhandle a large quilt with all those seams.

happylab 10-19-2019 11:41 AM

Thank-you all for your helpful input. I will post progress photos. I’m hoping to get it done this week. (That could be some real wishful thinking). I will be cutting out 1.5” blocks tomorrow and starting it on Monday. I have over 1000 small blocks already cut. I calculated over 3000 pieces for this project. Mostly batiks and fabric colors that play well with batiks. We will see.

Thanks, Connie.
I visited my mother last weekend--so no sewing at all :( . Needless to say that we didn't get to tackle her shed either, which was the reason for the trip.

I did locate the newest squares for the sampler. There are two of them, one in a batik and the other in a civil war colorway. I also found some squares to fix my Moratorium creation. This weekend starts on Friday for me so, Yeah!

I still haven't found the Quilt-As-You-Go I was looking for. Maybe when I get back out to my shed in a couple weeks ;) .

Keep up the good work, guys.

Vasilisa 10-29-2019 08:06 AM

Please keep your fingers crossed for me: currently I have 6 UFOs, 2 quilts started (not UFOs yet) and I am planning 2 new ones. My goal till the end of 2019 is to finish 5 UFOs and make 1 new quilt (it has precedence over the 6t UFO and the started quilts because it is for the little sister of the recipient of one of the UFOs, and I don't want to cause any sibling squabble).

Vasilisa 10-30-2019 01:18 AM

Yesterday I was writing during a break at work - then I returned home and counted again. 6 UFOs, 3 started, 3 new planned quilts. Someone is going to be busy at least till Christmas :)

retiredteacher09 10-30-2019 05:50 PM

Good luck, Vasilisa!

oksewglad 10-30-2019 10:32 PM

Such noble goals! Keep it going. I found another UFO I forgot about. It's a pastel string quilt made with a large rt triangle and strips of fabric in the other half of the 9.5" square...the box was labeled Amish Spring. I know it's been in the box for nigh on 25 years, if not longer. As luck would have it I found a piece of large pink gingham fabric just wide enough and about 5 inches longer than I needed. Batting was a piece of poly taken from a worn out tied quilt..probably as old as the flimsy! I threw it on the LA after watching the YouTube video Loading Lori's Way...took me longer to load it and baste it, but so easy to just keep quilting once I got started. Now to find some fabric to bind it...it needs a washing, too.

Vasilisa 11-03-2019 03:21 AM

Oksewglad, wow! 25 years - that means you have quilted for so many years. I just imagine how many beautiful things you must have made.

Meanwhile, I managed to make progress on my most overdue UFO, on one of the already-started things and on a new quilt (formerly: planned). I have also come up with an idea on how to use my blue and navy scraps (which means a quilt added to the "new-planned" list).

Here is my situation now: 6 UFOs, 4 started, 3 planned. And I still plan to finish 5 of the UFOs and 1 of the started quilts by Christmas. Keep your fingers crossed, please, because I have a full time job, to which I commute about one hour one-way, I am learning German and I go to classes every Saturday morning, I play flute (requires more or less regular practice), I cook meals at home (no fast food for lunch on my watch!), I try to keep the apartment clean (good it is tiny!), I am organizing my wedding, which will take place next spring (small family gathering, but still) AND I keep having remorse because I don't do any sport (read: I am neglecting my health). I just believe a bit of everything makes for a happy whole - just like in a quilt ;)

Ha Ha...I have so many mistakes as well! Made my first quilt for my daughter when when she was 2 or 3 years old...my GD now has it. It was a "postcard" pattern done in primary colors with a yellow gingham backing...could get the gingham 60" wide; used a old blanket for batting and tied it. That was 45 years ago. I'd make utilitarian quilts when I could, as I worked on our dairy with four kids to raise. Always found time to sew even then. Didn't start getting into more serious quilting until about 25 years ago.

Vasilisa 11-04-2019 10:35 PM

Oksewglad, even more wow. 4 kids - I cannot even imagine the turmoil that 1 would cause in my life ;) Did you work on a dairy farm?

Yes, Vasilisa. MrOk and I are retiring after 47 years of farming...our son and wife are taking over the herd. And they have 5 kids between 9 and 18 plus DIL works FT off the farm. I grew up on a dairy, so knew how to milk cows, but Dad didn't teach me how to drive a tractor...MrOk did. It seems every year a learned a new skill, whether it was plowing; discing; and of course, raking hay. I chopped alot of hay and corn silage on my "steel horse". I never planted corn, but did sow peas/barley one spring. I raised a lot of baby calves. Up until this last year I did all the bookwork which included finances as well as keeping the paper trail on all the animals (120 cows and that many heifers). One learns to manage time and sleep is total relaxation!

Teen 11-05-2019 05:20 PM

I love learning this about you, Oksewglad... I moved to a farming valley and the pastures are full of herds and crops. Hard work, for sure. They are discing now for the winter...miles of clean and tidy soil. Lol... I'll think of you, now, as I pass through.

How sweet of you Teen. Oh dear, a constant reminder of me as you go from Point A to Point B! We are getting snow today. Wonder if I will have to clean off sidewalk in front of the LQS this morning..work is calling. Have a great day.

Vasilisa 11-10-2019 04:37 PM

Meanwhile in Poland... It is already snowing in the mountains. In Warsaw, where I live, probably it will not, till December. Tomorrow is our Independence Day. I wish it was in a warmer season (4th July, I'm looking at you!), but I don't get to change history.

I worked hard on the weekend, and as a result, I am happy to announce that one of the UFO tops is done. Sandwiched, pinned with safety pins and ready for quilting. May the rest follow :)

Teen 11-10-2019 05:57 PM

Happy Independence Day, Vasilisa! We celebrate and honor our veterans/heroes tomorrow. It's a good day for both our countries. Congrats on completing a UFO. You are in the home stretch with that one now.

WMUTeach 11-11-2019 08:16 PM

Vasilia, I had no idea our little group was international. My mother's mother was from Warsaw. I don't know much other than she lived outside of the city on a farm and came to the U.S. when she was a late teen. One of my aunts went to Poland and did a bit of investigating and found a baptismal record for her. All so interesting.

It is snowing here in Michigan like it was the night before Christmas. Slick roads and my local birds are busy at the feeder. This much snow is early for us. I don't mind. I like to watch the snow come down and decorate the trees and bushes.

I am still and will be for a long time working on a large hand quilting project. After that is finished in the early spring, I will dive into my UFO's again. The quilt I am working on is 20 + years old and started by someone else. I will post the whole story when I am finished.

Motorcyclemad 11-12-2019 01:06 PM

Vasilisa: Happy Independence Day! It sounds like you are finally getting a handle on it--so keep at it.

 I found it! It took another holiday for me to really "Dive" into my shed. I also found Seven 2-1/2" strip quilts that were just sitting in a box. They only needed backings. They range from a generous lap size to a fair Queen. I had forgotten I had them done. :o Since I didn't do much in the way of sewing in October (at least compared to August & September), I am feeling pretty good. My other half sent up a flare--he said that I was out there for quite a while.

Along with all of this, I got the last kit for my two Saturday Samplers. I just have to figure out how I want to stage the final borders. Of course, I would want it larger than it is supposed to finish.
