Here are a few of my January finishes. I had a bit of a break from customer work after Christmas, and was getting antsy, so I dropped a few of my UFOs on the longarm while I had some time.
This quilt is from Missouri Star Quilt Company. I did a demo for my guild last year, and picked "Joshua's Star" - mostly because I'd never seen it before. Then, when the demo was done I made enough additional blocks to make a donation for Victoria's Quilts Canada. And the binding is a continuous bias binding made from 9 of the leftover layer cake squares. This is my own design. I wanted to play with the corner border block I found in EQ, so I designed the rest of the quilt to go with it. Not one of my favourites, this is a "One-fabric Quilt". I had bought a border print fabric to use with a mystery, and it just did not work when the quilt was done (way too heavy - the quilt has a lot of background space in it). So, I picked up the book at a guild and decided to try it out. Too wasteful for my tastes, so I fudged a bit to get as many blocks as possible - but that meant they did not all align perfectly. If my phone ever gets its brain back, I have 2 more to post. |

I beat my phone into submission, so here are the last 2 photos. That's 5 finishes for January! (so far)
This is my "Summer Sampler" from Freshly Pieced. I used my own fabrics, in an effort to dent my scrap bin (didn't work, but the quilt is all from scraps). And I resized the blocks to 10", so that I could donate the result to Victoria's Quilts Canada. Not a good idea - resizing from 12" to 10" is not that simple. A few artistic liberties were taken, to avoid trying to cut 0.4" and other odd numbers. This poor little thing has never gotten and name, and since it's also headed for donation it won't get one. But I bought these fabrics about 5 years ago because I loved them. And then 3 years later hadn't done anything and no longer loved them. But I hauled them to a retreat 2 years ago as a "extra" project, and when it came up I created the design and pieced the top in one day. It topped my UFO list all last year and never made it, so it was actually my very first finish for 2019 (I felt sorry for it). |
Wow, Krista you have been really busy this month. All those quilts look great, congrats on finishing.
|
Lovely finishes, Krista....Congratulations!
|
Krista you make us all look like slackers! And your quilts are lovely. My favorite is Summer Sampler.
Now for some of us...repeat after me... I promise (I promise) not to start (not to start) any new projects (any new projects) until I finish (until I finish) at least 2 of my old projects (at least 2 of my old projects) and 2 WIP's (and 2 WIP's) |
kristakz; I like the setting on Summer Sampler. Nice way to transition colors.
|
Was the Summer Sampler an Eleanor Burns pattern? She has an entire new book of quilts with log cabins in the settings, that same way. It’s called “40 Fabulous Years”. It commemorates her 40 years in quilting, and because her log cabin pattern is what made her famous, LC blocks are used in every quilt in the book. It’s on my wish list.
|
Wow, Krista congratulations on getting all those projects finished!
|
I have been AWOL from the site for a few weeks, looks like we have some great progress on ufos. Only thing that I have made this year was one microwave bowl too many obligations, but nothing scheduled for tomorrow so maybe I can find something to start working on.
|
Krista -- way to go! I broke Oksewglad's rule and started a new project this week. But it will use up a bunch of scraps and stash, so works for the Fabric Moratorium group. Then I'll get back to finishing up a few UFOs.
|
I finished a table runner today. It had been waiting almost a year. Whew!
|
I really wanted to join up but this year has started out in the craziest fashion! My Mom fell and fractured her pelvis. We brought her from NY to Ohio for rehab and she will be dividing her time between mine and my sister's homes when she's released. Our dynamics will certainly change and a lot of my goals are now up in the air. I'm not complaining at all, just being realistic. So why do I keep buying more fabric? I have a zillion things to finish :D
|
well finally got some of my quilts quilted actually 4 and have binding done just have 3 more to finish. Also want to get busy and make the wall hanging that was started several years ago.
|
Boston, congrats on your finish! Check off another UFO for yourself.
Susie, hang in there. Taking care of your mom is more important than finishing UFOs. Maybe you’re buying fabric as a form of retail therapy. I know I’ve bought things I didn’t need during stressful times, & on-line shopping makes it way too easy to overdo. Newbee, great job, finishing all those projects! You’re an inspiration. |
Susie, will be thinking of you as you care for your mom. Hope that pelvis heals well.
|
I wish your mom a speedy recovery, both for her well-being, and so your life can go back to your normal. I moved in with my mother to take care of her, and though I love her dearly, it can be trying at times.

Five more days to accomplish my goal of having all my UFO's sorted by the end of this month. I have been trying to take out at least one per day and deciding what to do with it. I am down to one office sized box of projects left waiting to know their fate. Most of those are kits I made up, but have not started, so I haven't decided if they are "real" UFOs or not. Two I had to throw away because the fabric had become brittle and was falling apart. :(
My list is at 23. Four of those of those are long term projects, six are finished floppies that just need to be quilted, and three are L/E's or crumb projects. Over the VQW, I basted and started the fmq on one UFO. I sent off a few floppies today, a UFO or two, and a few orphan blocks to a fellow board member whom I hope will be able to use them for donation quilts. Another floppy went to a different board member for some much needed embroidery. Progress is being made! woohoo! |
Conchalea- you hit the nail on the head. It's been very stressful and buying fabric has been a release of sorts. But my Mom is my top priority! The other stuff can wait.
SBG- thanks for the kind words, hon!!! She's healing well but she's not a spring chicken :) JJBLaine- thanks for your understanding, too :) You are all the best!! I never feel alone as we've all been there or somewhere and can relate! |
I love all of the finishes so far for this month. Yea!!!!! I will be going back and counting all of the total this week and again Feb 2, 2019, so we have a grand total for January. Don't forget to send your PM's if you want them to count in our totals. Thank-you ahead of time.
Lets see how well we do in completing more of our UFO's for the last 6 days of the month. |
Susie.. Lifting your mom up in prayer this morning. Thank goodness you and sis are able to give the care she needs.
|
I’ll join in. I have three UFOs I took to a Longarmer yesterday. 2 i should get back in Feb and one in April. Will post pictures on their return. I mostly work on slow quilts. But I have some tops I made in past that I need to finish. These 3 are some of the bottle neck (guilt), to finishing others.

There isn't enough time in this world for me to get all my ufo's done but going to try to make a whack at it. Finished some last year but not enough. Some were never started but in totes do they count as I am about to start a few of them also. got them for Christmas from hubby and you know they are special
|
I would love to join this challenge. So I guess the first step is locating all of my UFO's??!! For me, that will require pretty much tearing apart my sewing studio to find where I've stashed them all!! Lol.
I'm curious, why do others end up with UFO's? Boredom? Change in taste/style? Time? |
How do I join this group
|
momof3inmn...some of it is a little ADHD...new techniques and or patterns entice us. Sometimes we bite off more than we can chew...in other words the project is a little bigger than we thought or the skill set isn't up to our abilities yet. Oh and I haven't located all of my UFO's..it may scare me. I'm hoping to finish a couple of UFO's and WIP's before I start a new one this year.
If you have posted you have joined...easy peasy! |

Susie, hope that your mother’s rehab will go well. What a wonderful husband you have! Maybe kit up a little hand project—you can take it along for Dr and rehab appts. Most importantly, give yourself some some leeway for a while.
How do we end up with UFO’s? Hating one step in the process—layering—is a big one for me. So completed tops wait until I can make myself actually get them ready to quilt. Sometimes it can be lack of confidence, or choosing a project and discovering we lack the needed skills. It could just be that “seemed like a good idea at the time”. Or, as Oksewglad says, distraction by other pretty, shiny, patterns. In my case, this is: another Frank Lloyd Wright window? Another JN pattern? Another BH mystery? Let’s go! There also can be projects that have some emotional “strings” attached. You started it for someone you loved but could not finish it in time. That’s my oldest UFO. But it is almost quilted, finally, and will be done this year. And let’s not even talk about “I hate this quilt and never want to see it again”. It usually strike about 3/4 of the way through the piecing process. Good news! The Christmas tree is done! At least for now. It gets lights next year. |

Welcome tohorse1!! Good luck in your personal UFO challenge this year.
Momof3.....I don't have any UFO's but I can totally experience the difficulty in the challenge. I participate in this challenge to avoid them and get encouragement to finish what I start....and to support everyone in their efforts. I may have one UFO but it's really a WIP since I've been looking for a specific panel to finish it up. No luck so far...even shopped for it at Road to Calif. |
Momof3, like Teen I have no UFOs of my own, but I have one from my daughter. I joined this thread as a UFO-prevention measure. I know I could easily have UFOs in my quilts, since I have some knit & crochet UFOs. Like krisb, layering is my first stall-out point. I love cutting & piecing blocks & that excitement carries me through to the final block placement & sewing. Then...it’s almost like the urge to make that quilt is satisfied. I have to make myself layer, quilt, & bind it. But the binding means it’s almost finished & I can start another! Yay! And so it goes.
|
Pretty Christmas tree quilt, krisb! I have a similar panel, but with animals around the lit tree in the woods. Hope I finish it. Technically, it's not a UFO yet... it's just a 'too much fabric stash' right now.
I am not going to go rooting up all my possible UFOs. Too terrifying. I am just going to deal with the most "in your face" ones first, then see what else arises. I wouldn't dare try to have a count! (Shudder). |
KrisB- that is awesome! Wow, look at the tree border!!!
Thanks for the kind words. My Mom is a wonderful woman and she has a lot of helpers :) |
Welcome tohorse1 and momof3inmn! This is a fun group! I only have 1 UFO but 1 WIP is getting close to that year mark that I use for my personal UFOs.
SusieQOH: I'm glad you were able to move your mom closer to you and your sister. What a sweetheart husband you have for helping take care of your mom. krisb: Beautiful Christmas tree quilt. momof3inmn: I grew up in Central MN about 30 miles south of St. Cloud. |

I'm curious, why do others end up with UFO's? Boredom? Change in taste/style? Time? Welcome to the challenge. Handle your UFO's any way you want. We all work differently and we know what plan of action is reasonable and good for us. We are here to encourage one another to get some of these unfinished projects out of our way and into the hands of others. |

Me too, and that is what I do, cover up what is there with another and I think I now have 3 on the same wall and not a clue as to how to start any of them again

No, the summer sampler was from Freshly Pieced - each block designed by a different quilt blogger.
tohorse1, three very pretty quilts! |
Connie, thank you for the kind words. My husband is a huge help! As I said, he and my parents were always close. It was more like father/mother/son, rather than "in-law". My Mom has a huge support system and she deserves it as she was always there for each and every one of us.
While she's in rehab I've been working on an easy flannel kit from Shabby Fabrics. It's amazing how just a little time at the sewing machine each day clears out all the fuzzies that have been in my head since she fell. |
tohorse1: Wonderful finishes!
SusieQOH: I was like that with my inlaws. My mother died at age 60 so my DMIL became my mom and my inlaws would include my dad in things. I was so blessed to have them. |
tohorse1, congrats on your finishes.
