I think the yellow qst make sense if you have the yellow whole block. I really like the variation some have done w/ butting them up together to form a small set of yellow squares in the sashing.

So many good points being brought up here and they all make sense to me.
Bonnie put her green on the bottom when sewing her QSTs. If you do it that way you are not helping yourself nest the seams on the next step.
I like the shape it makes when the white part of the QST is next to the tri recs block.
As for the long sashing strips, I think I have done that only on one quilt. I always sew my sashing to the left side and bottom of my blocks.
I have been working on making more units - HST and tri recs. I used Eleanor Burns triangle in a square ruler. It was SO MUCH EASIER and every single one came out perfect! It does waste more fabric than the tri recs ruler but it is so worth it for what it saves on my patience.
I have changed up several blocks in mine but I think I will be happy with it. Time to starting sewing some blocks together.

Oh My Gosh! It has been awhile since I posted and I have been busy sewing some blocks together. I looked at it and thought, "What the heck?" I tried squinting, looking at it through color value glasses and got as far back as I could. I cut two of these out! So I am going to put them together, hope that when they are completely finished I will see them differently but I am not so sure about that.

Sandra-P, I agree. It all looks very disconnected to me too. What I have doesn't look at all like it will turn out to look like Bonnie's. LOL Will have to wait and see after I get more blocks/sashing put together. I have about 1/2 of the sashing blocks together and just over half of the others. They are not joined together yet. Company coming this weekend so no sewing will be done. :(
I'm seeing some beautiful tops and blocks here. Lovely

Anyone out there tearing out their hair like I was, trying to do the pressing? I decided BH's pressing was making me crazy so am doing my own way. I am assembling the strips of a block, for example making 16 strips of the center strip that has tri rec, QST, and neutral 4 patch. The other rows, making 32 of each. This way I can assemble the blocks without worrying about which direction it goes. And can make sure I have all different fabrics in the block. I will press the top, middle and bottom seams to the left, the other 2 press to the right. and then with the final piece with the red, I can get that pressed to the right and all will go together, only changing poressing will be on the verticle strips with the red.

And yesterday someone posted that the blocks needed to be viewed from a distance, and when I did that, it looks better. LOL Maybe I will finish this after all.

I wish I was patient enough to wait and see what others come up with for alternative layouts; I know from the past that there are some very creative minds out there. However I'm not patient today so I've settled on this layout. I will use just 12 blocks and still have to decide upon the borders and what to do with all the extra pieces. The top 6 are sewn together so far. If anyone sees a mistake, please let me know.

That's beautiful, Carol! I love your girly colors:) Sew pretty. I have only two more blocks and then the borders before I'm done. I'm only doing 12 as well, so I really appreciate you posting your 12 block quilt too!

It makes sense to add the borders as you go along. Maybe I'll do that, too.

I was confused about the yellow QST units, too. I spent an entire day experimenting and tried all sorts of different substitutions for that unit, which gave me an understanding of its function. I believe the unit is about connecting the blocks to one another for flow (the purple 4-patch), but also creating a separation (the green and yellow), because when the blocks are entirely connected using all purple, they look very massive and you lose the circular effect. The green and yellow also liven things up amidst all of that purple.

I also tried a different combination for the green/yellow blocks, but went back to Bonnie's original design. I did change the center of this block to a dark purple, just did not like the neutral 4 patch with my colors. I also put a pink floral fabric in the center of the star. I've got all the pieces sewn, and am sewing the blocks together.

i absolutely love it! I'm gonna keep going on mine. Trying to figure a fix around my ADD & think I did. We'll see later tonight when I try it out! Outstanding. Thanks for sharing & keeping me going! And it is just the size I needed to see!

I love seeing everyone's progress and variations. Today, I decided the four patch in the sashing just made everything look too chunky and as I was resewing I decided I didn't like the hourglass blocks in the sashing. This is how I think I will proceed. Note that some of this is sewn together and some is just new stuff laid on top of the blocks.
