With every quilt you learn something new, that's my firm belief.
This time I'm learning how to sew a scant 1/4" seam. I'm getting there, my blocks are more accurate. Some still are a tad too small but that's ok with me. Thanks for the compliments on my blocks :) My new fabric is on it's way, hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. Can't wait to use it. That Gypsy Wife is so much fun and a challenge at the same time colourwise. |
Your GW will be stunning, Anael......the scant is different on each machine. Once you find your accurate scant mark on your footer, you'll be good go. I use scant almost exclusively with blocks with points but some use it for even 9P....The tricks of the trade...lol...
|
Awww thanks Teen!
I used scant on the 9 p today and it came out perfect. I might have pushed the fabric too far under the foot and never got the right measurements. I use my straight stitch Juki for piecing and my Brother for machine embroidery. |
Teen when I see all your beautiful GTSB blocks I want to roll around in your polka dots too :D :D :D Your fabrics are really gorgeous!!
|
I need some help.
In the Gypsy Wife book is written: pinwheel block finished block 3"..........cutting instructions and then: Assembly: make as per 4" pinwheels. What does that mean? As per = like, the same way as? TIA! |
it means follow the directions for the 4" pinwheel but change the measurements so it will end up being 3". You will see that quite a bit as there is the same block done in different sizes.
I did not like that most measurements are for finished size, not the size it should be before you sew it in place. |
Thanks Macebaby, I thought so but wasn't sure.
Once you're used to measurements are finished size it's no problem, when starting it needed some thinking ;) |

I made a few more blocks. Still waiting for the Green Tea book to arrive. I sent the shop an email but they don't reply.
courthouse steps 7" finished Another courthouse steps. One of the steps is wonky but the block measures 8" finished. Weird....... Indian Hatchet I have a few more but I need to resize them first. |
I have to admit, the Excel files are a big help in keeping track of the blocks already done and all the colours I used. Specially with this one it's very important - at least that's what I think :)
|
Gypsy Wife is one pattern that your blocks need to be very accruate in sewing as you are fitting different sized blocks in with strips, and if you are not accurate it's not going to come together correctly. Sometimes you are sewing three strips with a block on top, then you sew another strip along that, and sew that to a bigger block -etc. As you assemble, keep checking your measurements to make sure you are not getting off on your measurements. Sometimes you may want to sew with a different seam allowance to get back on track.
You can ease a larger block into the strips, but if you try to stretch a smaller block to fit into the strip it won't work so well. |
Thank you Teen and Cathy!!!!! I just ordered 4 more patterns from Jen Kingwell.......:D :D :D
I was going to purchase a few this Saturday but I found a shop in Australia which is way cheaper, even with shipping! So now 4 more are on their way. Which ones? Happy Birds Bakers Dozen Midnight at the Oasis My Small World |

I wish I had the time to play....I am a Jen Kingwell fan and have 2 of her patterns waiting in the wings. I plan on going sweet tea and green beans, as well as long time gone. And would love to purchase gypsy wife. I have a full time job, a busy family, and a stack of UFOs, so am trying to finish off a few things before starting a new project. I love seeing your blocks, so will sit back and enjoy the show
|
Hi fatquarters! Welcome here and enjoy :)
Your day will come too. . I've been wanting to do Gypsy Wife for a long time and now it is that time. I had no idea Jen Kingwell has so many beautiful designs so I purchased a few more :D My UFO's don't bother me anymore. One day they all will be finished and if not, so be it! That's how I'm feeling right now, maybe in a few weeks that will be different again ;) |
Wow, love all of the blocks posted will look at picking up a pattern and joining in.
|

What pattern are you going to do? How exciting!! |
Gorgeous blocks, Anael!! Your fabrics are really beautiful and bright....the Orange block is so vibrant. Love it!! I've been avoiding looking at the patterns you are providing. Lol!! I'm packing and another UPS shipment would send my DH over the bend.....hahaha.... I'm thinking of just shipping to my new address and asking neighbor to stick in her garage until I get there or something. See? I'm so bad...
Glad others are thinking of joining in |

Great block jmoore! I love the colours and perfect piecing!
Sjens, can't wait to see your first blocks. |
I started Long Time Ago, maybe it was last year did not get to far. Maybe this will motion me to take it put and get it done. Making it in all Denyse Schmidt fabric but may change it up quite busy looking.
|
Hi Christine, welcome!! Nice to see you.
I don't know that fabric line but will google it ;) Please share what you've done, we would love to see it. At least you didn't say you started Long Time Ago a long time ago :D |
Anael, great blocks. I love how cheery they are. And, your piecing is just beautiful.
Jmoore, your LTG block is gorgeous also. I love all the cheery colors your using. I can't wait to see more blocks. (I just love flying geese.) |
I've got My Small World quilted and off the frame, so I took some pictures.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pscvzwczug.jpg I should have done tighter stippling or something around the dragon, he's hard to see. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psmwoyzogg.jpg I did a lot of customization with this quilt, and I also used some orphan blocks I had on hand. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pstufiolvz.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psimrrdbjt.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psctuwuyra.jpg And some fussy cutting for fun. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psrfbqd0es.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pswuzwyl2b.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psnmvueipl.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...ps955nxmw5.jpg |

Today I made a few blocks (some of them the small 3" finished ones), cut some strips and sewed these strips to a block, just to see how it looks :)
Here are two blocks I made today. A square in a square with Courthouse Steps Puss in the Corner with borders. I wasn't sure about the fabrics of this one before the borders. Somehow these borders pull it all together so now I'm happy with it ;) |

The only Jen Kingwell pattern I've done is the beans and tea quilt. I know mine is not so many crazy fabrics but I like it.
|
Hi Jean! Your Tea and Beans is lovely. It doesn't have to be wild and crazy! I love the colours of your Tea and Beans :)
|
Cathy, I love your Small World quilt. Great job on the customizations. But is the quilting on the Gypsy Wife that has caught my attention. It is fabulous!! I really want to make the Small World Quilt. I think it has bumped the Gypsy Wife off my must do quilt. I am even thinking of different customizations I can do. You have inspired me!!
|
Hi Jean, I love your completed Tea and Beans quilt. I think the fabric choices are perfect!! The quilt is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing your lovely work.
|
Seeing your small world, Cathy, makes me want to try it...I like it better than others I've seen.
|
Stunning work, Cathy. I am in awe of your skills. The little peeps in building windows is darling in your small world quilt. Just love this creation. GW is quilted beautifully. Stunning work...
Anael...more beautiful blocks. Can't wait to see your GW all laid out. Gonna be a showstopper... HI, Jean!!! Your tea & beans quilt is amazing!!! Beautiful colorway...my favorite block is the clamshell block..looks like all the colors of your Quilt top are in that and it pulls it all together. Thank you for sharing...you've inspired me to keep going. I am almost done with Section 4... |

Too funny but I found a paper where I wrote when I started and I did start " Long Time Ago" a long time ago in fact March 2016. Well here is a picture of how far I got. I think I stopped because it was so busy. But maybe that is the way it is supposed to be.

Frustrated.....I have no idea about the pattern but I like the results so far. Light and dark, small print and large print... well balanced throughout. It creates all kinds of secondary designs....looks like a perfect picnic quilt...

I finished section 4 of Green Tea & Sweet Beans today....really fun pattern...
|
Frustrated, all quilts she made are very very busy. You can change that by using less different fabrics for the other blocks. I really like your blocks though but it's your quilt.
Teen, wonderful!!!!!!!! |
I'm another that loves the patterns but not the fabric choices Jen Kingwell prefers. They look too "messy" to me, and the fabric hides the wonderful designs from the piecing. I've fallen in love with most of her designs when looking at quilts others have made, not from what she's got on the front of the pattern.
