Just a quick question - what is the final size of the HST blocks? - I think someone asked but didn't see the answer - Could someone verify the size please.
I will be watching to see if more pics come through :) 3 1/2" raw / unfinished. Hope this helps! |
I finished the lap size today with plans to make it bigger if I can source the fabric I need. Thanks again for sharing this! I've already got it in my calendar for next year!

These are great! I've got mine up on the design wall.
I think I will do a thin border of the blue and a wide border of the pattern and mitre the corners if I have enough fabric. I was also really surprised at how it came out, which is good because that was the point, right? Watson |

I have some contrast and clarity issues because of my busy fabric, but all in all I've enjoyed this immensely. Such an interesting reveal! I have the rows sewn and have to stop here and bag the pieces because I need to get back to the Bonnie Hunter mystery. This current clue is persnickety and I want to be done with it by Friday. (I wonder if the reveal will be Friday?) Watson, thanks so much for starting this thread!
|
Joe’sMom, I think it looks great. Your fabric choices definitely draw my eye to the pattern.
Watson, I love the pop of the contrast of yellow to blue. Seeing the reveal, I may have chosen different fabric. I think mine will have too much brown to show pattern, but I’ll keep plugging away. I got a late start and I’m a slow sewer. Just finished HST. Also, my HST came out exactly 3.5 without room for error or trimming. I usually make HST a little bigger to allow trim. I’ll share photo when I finish quilt. Hopefully tomorrow. Thanks for starting thread to share a fun sewing mystery! |
Quossum, I could see first pictures of your blocks, but not the later photo showing your progress. Based on your blocks, I think you’re going to have a stunner.
|
Wow - great work, everyone. I have all the sub-units sewn and pressed. I'll put the inner part of the top together tomorrow and post a pic. Then on to Frolic to try to get this step done before Friday. I'm working on three mysteries -- more than I've ever done before.

Well Kiddies, wish I would have checked in here. I miss the chat room we used to have with Patchwork Planet... heck I miss everything about that site. Anyway,,, here's our top... we did the twin, love how subtle it came out.

Well, got to get some other stuff done and get ready for work tomorrow. I am still working on the step 3 blocks. Yes the first ones. I don't have all my HSTs finished so have to make some of those every now and again. It will be something to work on this weekend. I hope my fabric shows the great pattern shown in the reveal.
You that have it that far it is very nice. Good job getting so much finished today. |
So many great color combinations from the photos posted ...Joe’s mom I do like how your fabrics played together and the pop of red... Great job Watson and Wendy.
After posting my photo yesterday afternoon I decided I had enough fabric so I’ve cut more squares and HST pieces to add another row for width and length to my lap size. I will make another 11 squares to make it a bit larger then add the two borders. I will gift it to my DGS for his 3rd birthday in May. What a fun quilt along and great pattern. |
Wendy, that's gorgeous!

JMoore, Watson, Joe's, Wendy -- lovely finishes! Qpossum - I can't see your pics, but I imagine it is lovely also.
I've finished all the blocks but have decided to make it one block wider and longer which should end up finishing 63 x 72". Here is what I've done so far. Not too keen on the bright orange -- burnt would have been better, but I have 8 yards of this orange left and am trying to use it up. |
Very striking, Belfry!
|
Very nice, Belfry. I think the colors really emphasize the pattern.

My quilt is completed... sandwiched and quilted. I did the lap quilt size. I had enough fabric to make one row. Finish size 65 x65. I wished I had used a lighter blue. My blues are to close in color.
|
Queenbj, I love your quilt and your blue! I think it looks so much nicer with that extra row. (Unfortunately, I didn't have enough fabric to add a row.)
|
Everybody's quilts look so gorgeous!
I finally got the main part of my quilt done and will post a pic once the borders are on. Queenbarbiej, thank you for posting an example of the extra added border. I read the part of the instructions where it says a 3rd border could be added to turn the lap size into a QoV, but didn't understand how one could go about doing that. Was that 3rd border color chosen because it was close to (or possibly is?) the A fabric used in the quilt? I think it gives it a really neat pattern-blending-into-the-border look with the fabric A triangles around the edges. |

I put the borders on mine. I had four HST left for some reason, so I used them in the inner border. Luckily I have enough of the dark green to use for binding, as I think that will tie it together. A little on the crazy side, but I like the colors!
I hope I did the attachment correctly this time! |
Great job Quassom and Belfry...wonderful fabric choices, your selection is perfect to show the pattern. Queenbj, I love your blues and coral/pink and you can still see the pattern just fine... a fabulous finish.
I pieced another 40 HSTs last night and will do the same as Belfry and Queenbarbie and add an extra row in both directions (10 blocks). Vadalia, I will keep my eyes open for your photo. |
Those quilts are very pretty! My favorite color is green.
|
Quossom, I am finally seeing your quilt. So pretty!

Since I've decided I have enough fabric to add another column and possibly a 3rd border, but have no idea when I'll get around to it, I hope you all will forgive my unfinished quilt here. All-in-all, I consider my first mystery quilt a success as I love how the pattern turned out!

I... just realized I sowed the pattern the opposite way it was supposed to go...
Oh, boy. Time to live that "done is better than perfect" mantra lol |
vadalia yours is one of the nicest I've seen! It's all in the fabric choices and how successfully they play off of each other in the final reveal. I've saved the clues for this - doing Bonnie Hunter's Frolic and other obligations - and will do it some day!

Yeah, I've seen almost everyone (including myself) who did the smaller version say they wished they'd done it in a bigger size (or are planning to) I was a bit nervous about doing a mystery quilt because I'm a newbie and don't have much fabric to "waste" if I didn't like the pattern- but this exceeded all my expectations! |
vadalia....your quilt looks great, the colours work wonderfully together.
Watson |
vadalia, that's beautiful! I honestly think it doesn't make a bit of difference which way the pattern goes.

Quossum, the colors are so striking. It’s beautiful.
Vadalia, great choices in fabric for contrast. It turned out stunning. Everyone has done such a great job with this mystery. I am still plugging away! I haven’t been able to spend much time sewing the past couple of days. But I am determined to finish this quilt. I will post a picture as soon as get it done. |
Lurking on the side lines. Too busy with other projects at this time. Plus I didn’t notice this thread until 30 minutes ago. Oh well. I did collected the clues and I enjoyed seeing everyone’s tops.
|
I started a second quilt with browns and green. It's taking a little longer than the first because I am pressing all seams open. As soon as the top is done I will post a picture.

Here is the top completed. I decided to change the inner border to the dark blue and do mitered corners to continue the diagonal theme.
Watson |
Watson I really like the change to the dark blue inner border! It really makes the blocks pop.
|
looks great, Watson
|
Thanks, Everyone.

I finally finished piecing the top. I still need to do borders. I think my Fabric B and Fabric C are too similar to create contrast. But I like the pattern and will do better picking out fabric next time I use it.
Thank you, Watson, for starting the thread. This was fun. |
pretty colors, Bev
