Merry Mayhem 2020 New Years' Day Mystery Quilt

1 Attachment(s)
For those of us who are going to participate in the Merry Mayhem New Years' Day Mystery Quilt Along,I thought I'd put up a post where we could gather to post our fabrics and then keep track the day of.

I *think* I have my focus fabric chosen. I've had it in my stash for ages.

With this fabric, I was thinking my background would be the green colour, the two blenders in fuschia and the bright accent in a purple.

Thoughts?

Watson, I think your fabrics will be fabulous especially with the two accent colors.

SusieQOH 12-15-2019 03:28 PM

I agree!!!

sewbizgirl 12-15-2019 04:58 PM

Pretty accent fabric! I haven't even looked at my fabrics yet...

Change of plans. I really wanted to do this using only my stash as much as possible, so I dove in and came up with this combination.

We'll see how it turns out!

That looks like a winner too!

Iceblossom 12-16-2019 07:51 AM

I love how we can go into our fabric and find something completely different that is also completely right! While the first two were one direction, the stash set is awesome too. That should make a happy fun ray of sun when it's done.

SusieQOH 12-16-2019 08:07 AM

Oh I love that, Watson!

I like this color combination very much!

Oh, I am so tempted to shop my stash and see...
This would be so fun!

Whoohoo! And here you all are!

We haven't had a moment to catch our breath here let alone pick out fabric... but it's on the list. Happy to have landed in the right place.

Watson 12-21-2019 04:09 AM

Is anyone else tempted to put together the HST's ahead of time? For my size (lap) there are going to be 40 of them and I will be cutting them larger and then trimming them down.

What do you think? OK to do ahead of time?

Watson

WendyMcD 12-22-2019 07:55 AM

I didn't realize there was more posted. Will have to go have a look see.

What with my fabric stack continuing to grow, I'm scared to commit to cutting. Plus one year, I did all the pre-cutting... worked up all the blocks then realized I hated my colors. I was about to piece it today as I've been doing a lot of fabric dyeing and I think I might toss some color at it. :-)

Watson 12-22-2019 08:10 AM

Yes, WendyMcD....fabric requirements and cutting instructions were sent out to those that signed up, about 2 weeks ago. Make sure you are signed up!

Yes, Watson, I’m very tempted. I’m also doing lap size. I think I will make them tomorrow.

I goofed and chose a directional print so some of my hsts are going to be upside down. Oh well. I’m on a fabric moratorium so had to shop from my stash and that’s the one that worked with my other choices the best. I’m doing this mystery mostly for therapy and stash busting so I’m going to stick with what I already cut. I’m really looking forward to Jan 1.

Watson 12-22-2019 12:56 PM

JanieW...are we going to get to see your fabric choices? Pretty please?

Watson

Tothill 12-22-2019 01:41 PM

I emailed Merry and she said there will be one more set of instructions prior to NYD.

I could only use stash so...

I’m using the pale green as the background instead of the white on white.

Watson 12-22-2019 03:09 PM

I think that will look great.

Those are some cute lambs.

Tothill...I guess I'd better wait for the next instructions and not jump the gun.

Belfrybat 12-22-2019 03:36 PM

Lovely choices from the two who have posted. I particularly like the sheep. From looking over the instructions it appears A and E will be HST? I prefer to make them by the magic 8 method so don't want to cut strips if that is the case. I know her mystery moves very fast so like some others would like to get one step ahead. I'll be back with pics of fabric choices.

I pulled two colourways. I like the navy leaf print but not sure about the lighter green. I'm working from stash. Any suggestions as to which colourway would work better?

Tothill 12-22-2019 09:40 PM

Belfry, I love the top combo. I like the contrast of the orange and I love green, so I like the ones you have there.

Watson 12-23-2019 02:45 AM

I like the top one as well. Your accent colour is going to give everything else a real lift.

vadalia 12-23-2019 03:49 AM

Aw, man! I had the perfect E fabric picked out from my stash. Been waiting forever to use it on a pattern that would specifically focus on it. Had a couple different color sets to go with it that I was feeling good about... only to realize after reading here that the pattern on my E fabric was going to be too big! :( The pattern would have just fit the squares we were supposed to cut out of it but I realized if those got cut down to triangles half that size, the pattern would turn into an incomprehensible mess.

Back to the drawing board for me...

armybandvet 12-23-2019 04:15 AM

I've never heard of this mystery so thanks for sharing it! I've only done Bonnie Hunter mysteries and this looks very different and fun, so I signed up last night. I do scrappy quilts almost exclusively, so this will be a good way to shake things up for me.

So I guess I pick my fabrics, follow the instructions as prep as they are released, then be ready to sew like a maniac on New Year's Day?

toverly 12-23-2019 05:19 AM

Perfect fabrics Watson in the second selection. Bright, sunny, love the focus fabric.

Belfrybat, I would go with choice #2, but then I love the water colors.

I might have to fabric shop my stash also, seems like a great way to use a focus fabric that hasn't landed in a quilt, yet.

I've decided on lap size in these batiks that have been hanging around for a while. My dark green got washed out by the flash, but there is a difference between the 2 greens.

I'm working with stash only and had a pink and orange set picked out too, but I'm not sure it's a good choice. The focus fabric is on a pink background that's nearly the same value as the dark pink I chose for "D." I'm keeping it out and might do a larger size in that set later if it will work out. I'm hoping this pattern will help me use up some large print multicolor fabric!

I took a photo of the pink and orange set to stew on.

Belfrybat 12-23-2019 07:19 AM

Army - I really like the batiks. Although the pinks are similar, depending on the pattern, it might work.

Watson 12-23-2019 11:52 AM

Army...I love those batiks so much, I've got three of them! :D I think that will go well.

I've done this twice before and you don't really have to sew like crazy to keep up if you're doing the lap size, at least. It's just comfortable. Last year it was a quilt as you go and I'd never done one before, so that was a challenge and I still got done.

Watson

armybandvet 12-23-2019 12:01 PM

Thanks! I'm fairly confident the batiks will work out ok. I like the pink and orange set too but this may or may not be the right pattern for what I have on hand. If I like the pattern enough I could see buying some yellows or oranges to replace the pinks. I still want the fun of the mystery though, so batiks it is for now!

I love your first combo with the navy leaf print! I can't wait to see how everyone's quilts turn out!

I really could use your ladies help with this Mystery Mayhem fabrics. These are the ones I chosen. Please could you help me decide which one. I only have enough of each blue to make the lap size quilt. I don't want to go shopping for more fabric.

I would like to download this
I have part 1
how early do they post2 and how soon after do the post 3
Thanks Gale

Krisb 12-24-2019 07:43 AM

The thread for this mystery is here. https://www.quiltingboard.com/quilti...t-t308590.html

Watson 12-24-2019 09:00 AM

Krisb...I made this post so that we could keep this in the Challenge area and all keep up with each other.

grma33....I'm not sure when part 2 is coming out...One of the posters said they were going to have another clue before New Years' Day but it says on the site, "YOU MAY GO ON TO PART 2 upon arrival at the One-Day Online Mystery Quilt event at" (their site) so I'm not sure exactly what's happening with that.

On New Years Day the clues come out once per hour starting around 10 am, I think.

Queenbarbiej...I like #3, myself.

Watson

Tothill 12-24-2019 09:04 AM

Queenbarbie,

I like both your "B's". I lean towards the pink/salmon one as the greens and blues are all from the same side of the colour wheel. But that is a personal preference thing.

Check out Karen Brown of Just Get it Done Quilts' Colour Theory videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxxKfjfNtq4

I like the C and D in the bottom photo, there is more contrast between them. Have you tried to take a black and white photo of them to double check the contrast?

The next clue is up. We can make our HSTs.

KatieBock242 12-26-2019 05:38 AM

I have never heard of this challenge before and this sounds like fun. Do those that are participating in this challenge have to do it on New Year's Day or can they download all the clues and work on it at their own pace?
Thank you.
Happy Quilting.Hugs Katie

Quossum 12-26-2019 07:39 AM

I've done this Challenge several times, have skipped the past couple of years, and am back this year to give it a go. I'm going to shop my stash for the fabrics.

I tell you, I was dismayed to see the 7/8" measurement stuff as I'm a Thangles type of gal, so when Part 2 came up I got happy again! I'm going to try to get those done before New Year's Day.

KatieBock242, though part of the fun is doing it on New Year's Day, wondering how it's all going to go together as you go along, you can definitely get the clues and print them out throughout the day to work on and finish on your own. But get them printed that day; the hints will be removed soon after.
