My first block is finished. I took several pictures and the pink appears much brighter than it really is. Jan

Great block, Jan!

Jane Quilter 05-03-2017 06:49 AM

Your pinks blend well together. Very nice block.

sewbizgirl 05-03-2017 12:26 PM

Enabler Alert:

I got a notice from Piecing the Past today (you all probably did too) of some awesome shirting FQs they are offering. They are perfect... but NOT cheap.
http://store.piecingthepastquilts.co...3&Item_ID=1899

Whittles has some nice CW fabrics for much cheaper... and even grab bags by color.

I plan to make 4 of each and then some more to make a Cal King. I did 16 but will try and post weekly as the blocks are done. Hawthorn Ridge fabric Jan Patek

sewbizgirl 05-03-2017 12:53 PM

Gorgeous, Anna! I really LOVE the fabrics in the first one-- the purple and green. I'm drooling over that block.

Annaquilts 05-03-2017 01:16 PM

Drool! LOL

https://www.whittlesfabrics.com/10-f...ar-backgrounds

They have several bags with 10 fat quarters.

If anyone orders these I would love to know what they got and what they thought.

Hmmm yes! I love green and purple. One of the reasons I do like Hawthorn ridge is that it has many different colors, blue, red, creme/gold, creme/white, purple, green. Often lines do not have green and definitely no purple. I have FQ so will be using all and probably adding CW fabrics to finish it.

Love Whittles... how can you beat LQS quality FQs for $1.40?

Here is my block #2, Woven Time:

sewbiz girl, I love your fabrics,...........they look great. I think I have that pink fabric too. And I love the fussy cut center block!

Jane Quilter 05-03-2017 03:25 PM

Annaquilts, I know you are making a CAL King, and that is the reason you are making 4 times the number of blocks. You are so creative and skillful at choosing fabrics for a block, have you thought about using the same block, such as Woven Time, and using 4 different sets of fabrics? Changing the fabric would make the blocks look completely different. I know you are not soliciting advise, but I keep running back to your blocks to admire them because they are so eye-catching......you have quite a talent there. (mine, by comparison, are kind of blah)

lawsonmugs 05-03-2017 04:01 PM

Wow there are some really great blocks here ladies. I love them all. I need to start mine before I get to far behind. Wonderful color choices too.

sewbizgirl 05-03-2017 04:25 PM

Thank you Jane. Those are some of my new fabs from Vicksburg. I went in looking for FQs but found better deals in the remnant bin... they were 50% off! :o

Can't wait to see yours, Mary!

Yes but since I am running it through Sizzix die cutter it is easier to do it this way. I will have so many blocks any ways it will not be noticeable. Thank you for your input. You are definitely right.

My pictures are kinda dark the black looking squares are really a semi dark brown.

Gorgeous blocks, ladies! There were a lot of little HSTs in that second one, weren't there? But it's worth it. So pretty.

Thanks for the compliments.

Lawsonmugs: I like that pink with a mauve tone. Your blocks look great!

Givio: The white with a small design really makes the block pop!

All caught up, here is my second block. Jan

Annaquilts 05-05-2017 09:12 AM

Sew cute all of the blocks.

Is anyone else besides me making a bigger quilt?

It also seems most are following the color scheme. Is that what people are planning on?
I am using a huge pile of FQs mostly from one line so I am going block by block and am working my way through the FQs.

Is anyone planning a different layout?
I am thinking of skipping the border but then hubby mentioned he really liked the border so I might rethink that.

sewbizgirl 05-05-2017 09:55 AM

Looks great, Jan. Love the pink-on-pink.

Anna, I am choosing to follow the color scheme, more or less. Not everyone is. All the quilts will be beautiful because the blocks are so nice. I love seeing different color schemes like yours. I'm just not that great at picking them for myself.

I haven't even thought about size or layout, just making one of each block for now. I guess I can make more later if I need/want to. I don't know who my quilt might be for... maybe my son who loves history? And I didn't even notice the border. I need to go back and look!

sewbizgirl 05-05-2017 10:00 AM

Checked the border... oh yes, it's so cool! And a good reminder to save scraps for it.

Jane Quilter 05-05-2017 10:03 AM

I asked Debbie about the boarder. She says it is a 4 by 4 made up of 1" blocks to total 4" square (finished)

Cool... so I will save my little scraps to make them. I assume we will be doing that last. Or now that we know, we could be making them as we go along, while waiting for the next block to come out. So... 1.5" squares will give 4.5" (unfinished) blocks to sew into our borders.

Funny I never noticed the border until Anna mentioned it. I guess I was zeroed in on the big blocks!

It looks like neutrals cross one diagonal, and reds/pinks cross the other diagonal, with the rest of the squares being blue and brown/tan.

Cheesehead 05-05-2017 12:45 PM

I wish I would have chose a different collection of fabrics. Civil war fabric I am not particularly fond of but thought it might be nice to do something different. I do enjoy making a different block each week and taking part in this group activity. Most of all I enjoy seeing the different fabrics everyone is using in their blocks. Jan

Since we just started maybe it is not too late to switch fabrics? I could see this work for anything with a small pattern, solids or tone on tone. The only thing that might not work is large prints. Maybe batik would look pretty?

lawsonmugs 05-05-2017 01:14 PM

Oh I think Batiks would be so pretty.

retiredteacher09 05-05-2017 04:45 PM

Very nice block, Cheesehead!

Annaquilts: Yes it is a bright pink. As far as the colors go, I am sorting through donated scraps and following her color scheme but not necessarily dark/ light. The caramel color in my block is from yardage.

Hmmm! I will need to look at the border now also.

Connie

I agree with Anna... it's still early, only two blocks made. If you want to change color schemes, I'm sure you can find another use for your first two blocks, eventually. You should work with something that makes you totally happy! :o

givio 05-05-2017 05:14 PM

I agree with Anna and SBG. It's only 2 orphan blocks at this time... If you are not fond of CW fabric, by all means, choose something else, if you are going to keep it. If you have the CW fabric and want to get it out of your stash, then maybe just make the top with CW and give the quilt to someone who likes antiques/CW fabric.

I think I'm going to make the border uniform and not scrappy. It will sew up quick with strip sets. I don't want to plan a different layout. This one is common, but that's fine with me. I'm thinking about changing the setting triangles and sashes to gray-- if I go scrappy like the pattern instructs. I have more grays than neutrals! Or, if I set with neutral, then I won't be able to go scrappy, and I'll just use one fabric. If I do that, then maybe I'll use one fabric for the sashes too, but something different than the triangles. Always so many choices!! :-)
