Rest and Refreshing BOW Civil War Sampler Quilt
Several board members are doing the Rest and Refreshing free BOW Sampler. This is a place where we can discuss each week's block and post our pics to encourage each other as we make this sampler.
This is the first week and the free block patterns will be released every Monday. They are only free for a week, so be sure to go and get your patterns on Mondays or early in each week. This is a great sampler of 10" blocks, to use up your Civil War fabric stash. An email list is available to have a reminder each week to download the new block, but you don't have to sign up in order to go to the site and download the block pattern each week. http://www.piecingthepastquilts.com/ |
I went to the website and signed up but couldn't find the first block. Has it been released?
|
Yes it came out on Monday.
Well, it looks like I was wrong. It seems you do have to register to get the links to the patterns. I thought they were on the site but I couldn't find them either. Barb, if you just signed up, I'd give it a day or so for them to send you the link. If you don't have it by Saturday I'd contact them and ask for it to be sent. It won't be free anymore after Sunday night at 11:59pm. |
I think what is meant is that you are not required to sign up, but you can do so if you desire. When you get the email, then you download the free pattern. I hope to see pictures from others who are doing the blocks! If you have done a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, or other 'quilt along' types of projects, then you will know how encouraging it is to work on a project together. I did lots of Farmer's Wife Sampler blocks on this forum. I'm looking forward to doing this sampler. :-)

Beautiful 10" blocks. Fun, fun, fun. :D |

I'm not sure I can use the same colors as in the pattern every time, but I have enough fabric for the blocks to be in the Civil War type theme. For the other elements of the quilt top, I'll just see what I have that will blend in.

Ooh, nice stash of CW fabrics, Givio!

This is the first time I'm trying to do a block of the week (or month) thing! I'm trying to stay shopping in my stash.
|
Oh like this! Let me see if I can get signed up. I also have plenty of Civil War FQs.
|
I signed up late. She says on her web page to contact her (I emailed her) if we signed up late. She has already sent me the first block. Sounds like a great lady to work with.

sewbizgirl your block turned out beautiful love the fabrics.
givio I nice stash of civil war themed fabrics love them! I am using my civil war themed scraps first before I cut into my yardage if at all possible. Here is my week 1 block |
Love your block, Christine!
I found out pretty quickly I am very short on Civil War pinks. Think I have plenty of everything else, esp. neutrals! I'm glad the sign up is working well for everyone and that she is sending out the block promptly to everyone who asks. I'm loving the 10" size of these blocks. They will look great in a quilt. |

I find I do better with a BOM or BOW if I am part of a group, like this. It keeps me going and on track when I see other people's blocks and progress. :o |

Here's my Block 1 and I'm following the color scheme but still am not sure exactly what constitutes Civil War fabrics. :).

Nice block, Connie! Civil War fabrics are reproductions of actual fabrics that were used during the early to mid 1800s. You can use any fabric you like, tho. I like your batiks! The blocks will be pretty in any fabrics.
I think she said she was building the skill level each week, so this week's was very easy... just squares and HSTs. Wonder what's next? |
I just received the block instructions today from Debbie, I can't wait to get started. I have very limited fabrics for this project at this time but I can't think of a better reason than to go out shopping for more, lol. Hope to get started on this block in the next day or so, I do have several fq's that should work great for this block.

Hi Jan,
Did your cheese just blink at me? :D |
Givio: I have been sorting through blue donated scraps and I found a 1.5" strip of your 10th fabric from the left in the top row. Mine is on the gray side of blue. I just thought that was funny I spotted that one in your fabric. :)
Sewbizgirl: Thanks for the definition. I have looked it up several times but my brain just didn't retain it. Lol! Connie |

Pretty blocks....

RetiredTeacher09, I just looked up Civil War fabrics on Pinterest. There are loads of examples there.

SBG, It looks like you have a couple of 'double pink' prints in your block. One of these days, I'd like to collect a variety of those and sew something with them. I'm fond of those! You have plenty of "esp. neutrals"??? Lucky you! 'Especially neutrals' is what I'm generally lacking in. lol How can you keep them in stock, when they get used up so fast?
frustratedquilter40, nice to meet you again on a thread! :-) Your brown fabric gives your block wonderful movement. Lovely! Connie, Your fussy cutting is so cute! I don't think people have to use CW fabrics. Any fabric you like is just fine. I think you have a nice start with that block. I think the fabric you saw in my picture will be fun to use. I'm sure you can incorporate your scraps if you want to. Some of the prints that I gathered are not reproduction CW prints-- just ones that I think will look good. I often find that the little calico Cranston prints from the 70's blend in nicely for projects done in various themes. So refreshing to have a 10" block. I haven't done this size in quite awhile! |
My opinion is that there will be a lot of 2 1/2" cuts used for this quilt. Oh my am I sounding committed? I have some lovely blue and yellow scraps I can use and enough coordinating fabric for a plain border.....off I go to the stash.....then back to the baby quilts....

Givio, those two double pinks are the only pinks I have. I tried to find something to fussy cut, but it would not have been pink... |
Okay....checking my fabric...seems I have a UFO project started...oh my...now to another plan....
|
Thanks for the Pinterest link, Sewbizgirl. That was helpful.
Givio: Thanks for the compliment on my fussy cut. I'm so glad that pink was with my other donated pink scraps and that the butterflies were a perfect fit. :). I did find another strip of that 10th pattern in your picture. I wonder if there is more hiding in a bin. I get donated fabric scraps from 2 sewing groups and sometimes I get the same fabrics from both of them over the course of time. :) Connie |
I wondered what constituted CW fabrics but how can you tell? Does it say on the bolt?

I'm signed up and love it as my Fresh Lilacs is almost done. Am waiting on more of one fabric for the border.
There is a Facebook group that you have to be approved for, but you can post the blocks etc there. Debbie is most helpful, and her business card has quilt backs, batting sizes, etc., listed on the back. I thought I saw where there are 543 of us. |
I am looking forward to doing this BOW. I followed one group when I made my Dear Jane here on the QB and I made my Sylvia's Bridal Sampler and Loyal Union Sampler on a Yahoo group. It is so nice to share your blocks and get the encouragement from your fellow members.
Totally different as here in the UK - Civil War fabric is quite hard to come by and expensive. I have a LOT of Christmas fabrics and I shall be using them. |

Beautiful block, frustrated quilter 40! I may try to do the block of the week. Thanks.
|
tessagin, The info on the selvage often gives a clue, if it mentions 'reproduction' or something like that. You can look online to see what description is given for a particular group of prints.
Battle Axe, nice info, there! Thanks. 543 -- and counting, I guess! :-) Well, FB is popular, but I don't like to use it. |
OK I am in the loop and signed up.
|
Good girl Anna, especially since you send me this link. ;)
I am signed up, printed the instructions for this block and the other info. Will be another couple days before I can get mine done tho. Quilt show this weekend and two sofa cushions needing to be done and a baby quilt as well. Lots to do. Will be fun to join along and play with my reproduction fabrics. I seem to hoard them. |
I can hardly wait for the next block!
