I just found the wikipedia link that describes the acronym to help in understanding the principles of the diet. Here it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FODMAP.

My daughter was diagnosed with IBS 2 1/2 years ago. She was 17 at the time and it was hard for her to think about changing the way she ate, but when we got help from a book I bought on Amazon, she was amazed at how much better she felt that it really helped her attitude as she learned what she could and could not eat. The book we bought was IBS: Free at Last! by Patsy Catsos. It did a wonderful job of describing what IBS is and how the food we eat affects our bodies. What we did, and the book directed, was to cut back to a very simple diet for about 2 weeks. After the two weeks, her body had stabilized and we started to add food groups in, one at a time. She kept a food journal so she could see what affected her and how. Then we would cut that group out, give her body time to stabilize again, and go to the next food group. This took a while, but she learned so much. For instance, she is extremely sensitive to flour but other foods, like onions, etc., she seems to handle better. Each body is unique and responds differently. Your body will respond differently as well, and if you want to try this book, you will go on a voyage of discovery too. The great news is, that when she eats as her body can handle, she has almost no symptoms. The GI specialist gave us a single sheet of information that was less than helpful, that's why we decided to branch out and get a book. Good luck to you!
