Help me plan high calorie healthy snacks to take along.

My 23 year old son recently discovered Peanut butter and banana sandwiches. When I informed him this is not a new discovery and was a favorite of Elvis, he wondered, "Our cat Elvis liked peanut butter and banana?" "No not our Elvis, Elvis Presley." "Who's Elvis Presley?"

Think heavy dense food, more calories to the bite. Like meat, cheese, nuts and dried fruit (make your own to reduce the sugar). What about protein shakes from GMC and health stores? My SIL has the same body shape and high metabolism (but not the heavy exercise schedule).....my daughter has to feed him all day long and have food available for him to help himself snack. I'll ask her for some recipe hints.....Good Luck

The only thing I did not have was the chocolate so I used craisins. I rolled 5 for him and put them with his stuff for today. I also fried up some slices of spam. I think variety helps too. He is not one to eat much of anything but if there is variety he'll eat a little more. He just seems kind of sad. Not much of a talker. This is his first year at college and his lady friend is out of state to college. He seems a little overwhelmed. I am trying to encourage him to find some new friends. The ones he had have all moved out of the area. Changes. Before you think he is my first one to go to college or leave, he is my 11 th. He currently has 2 sisters going to the same JC. Most of us have the opposite problem, we gain.

When my oldest daughter went off to college, she had an 8:00am class followed immediately by a 10:00 class across campus. She was not/and never has been a good breakfast eater, but found by her 10:00 class that a headache was forming. I know this is unorthodox, but the thing I found that she would eat was a "cookie as a meal" I make a mean chocolate chip cookie with oatmeal in the recipe. We decided that there was just enough goodness in the cookie (eggs, oatmeal, butter, chocolate chips) that it would get her to lunch. I made them extra large and wrapped them individually in cellophane.....the "cookie as a meal" was born. This was 25 years ago before you saw those cookies at every coffee shop. (I should have gotten a patent on it!!) I would send her a box of cookies every couple of weeks, she'd put them in her freezer and grab one on the way out the door for her class.

This recipe sounds great. However my gluten free husband cannot handle oats of ANY kind (even the supposedly gluten free ones).
Cold bacon and cold breakfast sausage--ewww! That would sit in the pit of my stomach like a heavy pancake all day..
There are usually small "grab and go" stores all over campus where he could grab a sandwich (Subway with coupons) or some quick snacks also.

My husband tells me his parents sent 4 - yes, 4 - sandwiches with him for lunch in high school! Maybe your son could double up on the burrito for lunch? My DH is 6'5" and slender at 69. He can literally eat anything and not gain weight.
Nuts are a great idea, too. Send celery (cut) and have him keep a small jar of peanut butter in his bag so he can dip and eat.

Sorry to hear your DH doesn't do well with the gluten free oats either. Some times it is just plain hard to find something that works.
Buying food on campus is pretty cost prohibitive for us and him.
