The upgrade carrage does make a big differance. It is more stable on the frame and does not wooble as much.

I have one of the mouse pads for coumputer that has the wrist strip on it and put on floor with the wrist strip away from me that keeps the pedle from slipping back and keeps it in place.

I have one and it will only cut two layers of fabric, will not go over seams. You have to cut the first inch your self then it cuts as you sew. I would not buy one for the quilt edge.
