Could you cut the background edge pieces larger for the top and bottom. One triangle will overlap the next, but you should be able to trim to a straight edge.

Is your machine sewing backwards ( bottom to top) when this happens? The thread may be catching on something, perhaps the needle plate or bobbin. If so, I would have a machine tech look into it.

Just a quick stab at this. Try figuring using 2" and 3" strips would make it larger, includes seam allowances.
That should add 1/2" to every row, or 11" per block.
