I remember the machine they had where the saleslady would press the handle and then run the fabric through it to measure, then press the handle again, which would clip the fabric. Then the saleslady would rip.

I worked in a quilt shop in the late 90's that ripped nearly all the fabric (some fabrics just dont tear straight- those we would very carefully cut) I rip my fabirc at home frequently- especially if I am going length of grain for borders. Naturally I add a little to the measurement so I can trim off the little "whiskers", but the long strips are always straight that way it it takes far less time.

Some LQS still rip around here. I know the 108 inch wide backing fabrics say "Tear" on them

Sorry, but I have a very stupid question. So when the material is snipped and ripped is that from salvage to salvage which would be the lengthwise grain? Can you also snip and rip the crosswise grain to create smaller squares, etc?
