Don't Like a Messy Sewing Room
#31
I am quite neat and organized. I just can't function in a mess. I do create chaos when designing or rummaging, but I always clean it up. I have a couple of quilty friends that are the opposite of that. When they come by they always comment on my space. And I when visiting them wonder how they accomplish anything. (To myself of course) I think this is just me. A habit from childhood. I enjoy keeping my space nice, taking care of my stuff, and in my brain that means keeping myself and my things organized. I wouldn't feel comfortable in my friends spaces and I'm sure they wouldn't in mine. Funny how we are all so different!

I make the bed after my first cup of coffee in the morning...no lumps, no bumps..as I have said to children, grands and now a gg.....living room in order..pillows fluffed and in proper place, coffee table clear, kitchen sink clear, counters clean, stove clean when kitchen is "closed" at end of day.....BUT...my sewing cave (like man cave) is my private domain...the only child syndrome really shines there... And it is, right now, in a state of MESS.......working on three/four things...accomplishing nothing really......I keep the L/A area clean, but MY sewing area .........is overflowing.....yesterday, I ruler folded some fabric..never did it that way before...like it and will do more...later..
I think my New Years resolution is to get rid of many books and mags....I find I do not refer to them as much since so much is now available on YouTube or the like......today I AM going to go back and ATTACK......after I make the bed.......

I have 2 projects on my table right now. Other projects are in boxes with the person's name on them. I splurged on the 14x14" scrap book boxes. Actually got them on sale for $4 each. But they stack well and are clear. I can see what's in them. I have my rotary cutters in a large marker pen/pencil holder and some scissors as well. DH knows the yellow ones are "NOT" for fabric. Any odds go into a basket. fabric that needs to be pressed and folded. A small basket. No time today or tomorrow. Hoping to hit Quilt show in Robstown today or tomorrow. If in the area, come on down.

You are just neat. Wish I could be. I try to keep my projects organized, but the rest is usually a jumble. Right now I have a quilt on the machine table, and another sorted and laying out on the table I will clean up when I get done, but like today, I just seem to have to much going on.

I tend to make piles for each project I'm working on at the time. I hang my strips on hangers above or near the cutting table so easily found when needed. As I make scraps when cutting I throw them into a pile at the end of my cutting table. If I think I might be able to use them in another future project, I place them in a special pile with the quilt pattern. I'm thinking though I need to start putting them in a plastic container so I can put them onto the floor next to the cutting table as I'm getting too many future projects piled on one end. After each project is done, I put all the excess from it away and vacumn as I like to throw the thread cutoffs on the floor since I tend to miss the trash can most times. Then I start again with the next project. I don't care for clutter either but sometimes it just happens as we work.

I applaud you for your neatness in your sewing room. Sometimes I think I was born with a "messy" gene, so it's hard to keep organized. That said, however, when I was a medical secretary in a hospital with crazy days, I would periodically stop and straighten up my desk so I could continue working. I may be messy, however, I do have limits as to how long I can work in chaos. My biggest problem is space, since we moved to an apt. from our 3 bedroom house, my sewing area shares my bedroom, so space is really limited. I will be working on a project, have all the fabrics sorted and organized; then I have to stop, take everything off my bed (my horizontal filing system) so that I can go to bed. Sooner or later I might just overcome my messy gene, or at least I hope so.

Wish I could be like you. Congratulations! I think one of my reasons is that I don't have very much space since we sold our house and moved into a condo. The room contains my computer, my husband's computer, my quilting stuff, and my cardmaking supplies.
