Starting a quilting group at a retirement center

Wonderful idea Feathers. Check with the social director to see about rules, regs and space/time availability. She will probably be thrilled to have someone even interested in the people there. It is a job to enthuse the residents to do new or different things, so don't be disappointed if there isn't a large response.

I think that is a very kind and generous offer. Do you know if there is an interest in a sewing/quilting group in the community? I think getting the answer to that question is your first step. If you've already done that - apologies. Otherwise I think you have a great plan! Hope everyone enjoys.

I read about a lady in a nursing home who made 100 little dresses for Africa when she was 99 years old. On her own, I believe. On the other end of the age spectrum, maybe consider teaching sewing to young girls. Some may like it and become future quilters.

great idea! a local guild (not the one I belong to) meets once a month at a local assisted living center to sew with residents that are interested. They bring in machines, precut fabrics, etc.
One think that might help, besides very good lighting, is someway to thread those needles as many may have vision issues. And don't forget to encourage the guys to attend--even if they are not interested in using sewing machines, they can cut and press--and would likely be interested if you had a die cutting machine!
