I pin perpendicular and out of the way of the seam line. I only pin IN the seam line when I have an intersection or something needs to be eased. Then I'm careful to take them out and not sew over them.

I pin from the centre outwards trying not to place pins where I intend to quilt. I place pins as close os my hand can reach pins. More pins the firmer the sandwiching.

I still pin all the time even though I've been quilting since 1992. I feel more comfortable pinning. I pin up and down but away from the seam line so I don't have to take out the pins as I don't sew over them. And I do, also, put a pin on both sides of a seam. I always get perfect matches in my seams that way. Always!

When piecing I do not pin a lot. When petting roew together I pin at cornerd and line up seam lines first. I also start by putting a pin around the corner of the beginning of the seam, that seems to help keep everything straighter. the rest I pin sieways(at right angles to seam). If fabric is slippery orif difficult sea i pin parrel to seam. My machine can sew next to pin till it reaches head.

bottom linedo whatever works for the occassion

I don't pin at all anymore, I feel that the pin often distorts the fabric and it hurts as much as it helps. Now, if I need to keep fabric aligned, especially when I'm matching seams, I use a tiny dot of washable school glue.

If I'm sewing strips I pin parallel to the seam. If I'm matching seams, I pin perpendicular
to the seam line first, put a pin where the seam should match. THEN I pin parallel about an
inch from the needle and remove the pins that I put perpendicular. That way I don't have
any pins going under the needle. I know this may sound odd or a waste of time for but it
works for me. I starch my fabric heavily and this helps a lot with cutting and sewing accurately.

I very rarely pin. When I do it is perpendicular to the way the material goes over my machine bed. I pin from the left to the right stopping just short of the sewing machine sewing line so I don't have to worry about removing pins - this as a just in case measure.

Do you mean: When pinning units together for piecing do you pin perpendicular to your seam line or parallel to it.

If so...I pin perpendicular to my seam line. I can't imagine pinning parallel, unless you are hand piecing and even then that would be a bit cumbersome because you would have to remove the pin long before you get to that area for stitching. By pinning perpendicular to the seam line, especially when machine piecing I can stitch right up to my pin before removing it. In some cases I will stitch right over it if the placement is such that I am sure my needle won't hit the pin.
I pin like her. I make sure my pins don't go past the edge of the fabric.

Perpendicular to the seam with the pins head on the *left* side of the needle as the piece is sewn.
