I agree LavenderBlue, that said I love hand applique too and haven't tried hand stitching using this method, maybe I will have a go sometime and let you all know if it works!

This method works very well to with hand stitching but for a kids quilt or a quilt that is washed often the
machine stitch is more durable.

Great tutorial. Thanks. This is how I do my applique but have always had trouble with getting those pesky little places like you did on the circle but your technique of the little ripples should do the trick.
