I like the idea of straight lines resembling lattice in the background, with occasional leaves and vines. Would be stunning - and that's a beautiful quilt top.

Great quilt! I agree with doing some sort of background. I find the lattice idea intriguing. I would do some sort of texture on the stems, veins on the leaves and petals on your tulips. Please share when you are done.

How about echo quilting? I also like the idea of veins in the leaves.

LOVE the idea of a diamond pattern cross hatch (suggesting a trellis). Stunning quilt!

So have you decided yet? the cross hatch will look nice, but that will be lots of starts and stops and a great deal of lining up if you don't go over the appliques, I would suggest doing phantom leaves off the vines with tendrils, curly cues, to fill the background up. Of course the detailing on the flowers and leaves I agree with the consensus. you may even want to do some phantom flowers in the background.

Love that pattern! You did an great job. I would quilt down the leaves and vines mimicking veins in the leaves. The flowers, I would quilt up and down mimicking the flower petals. Background, if you are hand quilting, I love the grid idea.
If you are machine quilting, I would do a meandering vine stipple on the background leaving the flowers and vines free to "pop". But then, I am a FMQ so I'm partial to the background stippling. Either way, the quilt will be beautiful no matter what you decide to do.

In the back ground after I stitched around all the applique I would stitch in some Leaves and than use a filler stitch in the rest.
