I saw a very similar scrappy version somewhere (possibly here on the QB.)
The stips are 2 1/2" and I added a 2 1/2" square to the end of the yellow. LOL Owlvamp, but you should have enough 2 1/2" stips to make a very scrappy version. I sewed the red, blue & green into long strips then cut them at 8 1/2" then added the yellow (cut at 8 1/2" with the blue square added and trimmed to 1/4") so that each block is 8 1/2" square.

I'd go with the 50x58 as those little ones grow fast!

Beautiful, bright and wonderful! I would choose making it longer.

I did a similar design and all of the pinwheels are in the middle. Mine has 36 blocks plus the border.

Gale, I love the colors in your quilt. Now I am rethinking the width of the border. Is yours a 4 or 5 inch?

Great quilt, either way. Yu could ask the grandpa his opinion as he probably has in mind how the child will use it, bed or drag around. If no preference I would vote for square, then as he gets older he could use it across the bottom of a twin bed with another blanket in one of the solid colors and then still carry it around.

I wouldn't base my decision on using it in a crib. It isn't safe to have blankets in cribs with small children because of smothering. A friend's little girl who was 10 months old at the time smothered with a blanket in a crib when a baby sitter was watching her. Very tragic. The child is more likely to use the quilt on the floor to lay/play on, drag it around and snuggle with it. Either shape is fine but I would probably go with square to keep the pattern in tact. Really like the pinwheels.
