I usually put it on around 7 or 8 pm and it's ready when I get up around 5 am. Most of the time I'm taking it to church pot luck. It may be ready sooner - I'm just not up to check it. I might add, on my newer crock pot I start it on high and turn it down to low (after 2-3 hrs) before going to bed. Seems the newer crocks cook at a higher temp. Everyone wants my gravy recipe. Actually I think you could put cream of mushroom soup on anything and it would make it taste good.

I've done almost the same roast but instead of the onion soup mix and Hidden Valley, I added Dry Italian Dressing mix. It is awesome. Now I will try this!!! Sounds so good!!!

love gravy when I make pot roast in the crock pot but I don't love the roast.
although the meat falls apart it isn't tender. I've tried chuck and round with the same results.

This reminds me one time we had a family emergency and roast in the oven. Took the roast out of the oven and put into the fridge. It was done. Got home in the early a.m. Got up for breakfast and heated part of the roast up. Fried up some eggs and that was one of the best breakfasts we ever had. Every once in awhile I do that for myself if DH has to go into the office earlier than I have to get up.

The slow cooker is good with a rump roast too. No fat. But very good.

I do my roast this way too. Just doesn't get any easier.

    1 4 or 5# boneless chuck roast
1 pkg. dry onion soup mix
1 pkg. dry Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix
1 pkg. dry Au Jus mix
    1 cup beef broth

Mix all dry mixes in the one cup of broth until all dissolved. Put roast in crockpot, pour broth mixture over. Set crockpot on low for 8 hours.

That's it...couldn't be easier. I served mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli with it. The gravy from the pot is great over the potatoes.
This is an absolutely great recipe. I used a small eye of round roast and cut it into pieces so it would cook faster. I did everything just like the recipe called for except that I cooked the roast in a 350 degree oven using a 5 qt Magnalite Dutch Oven and added about an extra cup of water. I cooked it covered the whole time. About 2 1/2 hours later, it was done. I found it a little bit salty. The next time, I won't use any salt in my potatoes when I am boiling them for the mashed potatoes. It still had both my husband and myself oohing and aahing. Absolutely the best tasting roast I have had in a long time.
