    I layered the flannel, batting and the largest shirting square and then added the next size and sewed around that one to hold them together and then the next one after that. I hope that's clear. I do remember using a glue stick to help keep everything in place while I stitched them together. Then I just put them together like you do a regular rag quilt. You could make the shirting block first. Then layer and quilt. I made this up as I made it. It was made for my daughters camper. It had to be able to take a beating.

I've also used my embroidery machine to personalize the quilts. I usually use 3 layers of flannel (instead of two layers plus batting), but I've also used woven cotton with a layer of flannel in the middle as in the baby quilt.
