like many on here, I start with a gentle check of the handwheel to check status. It does not "really" matter because no matter what i find, I will do the next step....
Remove access covers, remove any foreign matter (particular attention to feed dog area, main connections between vertical and horizontal mechanics, and behind face plate)
Tri-flow every location where metal moves against metal (I do not own machines newer that 1925 so no plastic)
Wait one day.
Check handwheel again, and repeat Tri-Flow, wait sequence.
any machine that do not play nice after that a time or two, get specific jam locations identified and gone over with a wire brush and then Kroil. Wait overnight, clean and Tri-flow, then try again.
I have only got one machine that this has not worked on.

I am skilled in several artistic arenas and I have always taught myself with books, videos, classes and just doing it. I learn better that way. There are lots and lots of forums with people who will gladly share whenever you get stuck. Go for it and enjoy the process.
Right now I am learning to buy vintage machines and cabinets. One of my earlier today posts shows how I didn't even know how to open the front of a sewing machine cabinet to brace the table top.. Ha! Ha. I know now and will NEVER forget.
