I also have a pile of quilts that the tops are done, but I need to finish and get out of the house and get rid of that 'pile.' I rent a LA at a LQS. I've done one a week for the last two weeks. I'd like to get moving on a third for this week.
I have tied a few newborn quilts and donated them to the NICU at work. No one ever complains. It lets the piecing stand out vs the quilting. Glad to hear that you've reconnected with the ways of yesteryear!

I have "machine tied" a quilt and it works really well. Do a few zig zag stitches in the tie location and then lay a piece of yarn, pearl cotton or ribbon over the zigzag, take a couple more stitches then move on to the next location. Tie your choice of yarn, etc in a knot and it looks like you hand tied the quilt.

I think tied quilts are kinda like insulated underwear. You have lots of little pockets to hold the heat and they are so soft and cozy. Works especially well with heavy fabrics like double knits and denims also. Heavy flannel backings are very comforting too.

I like tied quilts. The quilts with quilting every half inch are stiff and more useful as a beautiful wall hanging then something I would want to try to cuddle into or have on my bed, unless it was for decorative purposes only.

Sorry to be different, I prefer to quilt quilts and tie comforters. I don't quilt real heavy, or close.
When I made comforters I used thicker poly batting and tied them.
Whatever works for each one is what you should do.
