I have two ideas to address your fear of cutting 1. Use old shirts etc. to practice cutting. Make a potholder or two to practice basic sewing skills. 2 Buy remnants from Jo-ann. They are cheaper than buying fabric of the bolt. And most importantly, we all (including the most accomplished quilters) started somewhere. You can do it :-)

Stop buying 'stuff' until you can say you needed it and are using it.

I'll tell you a funny on me. Some 15-20 years ago, whenever it was the miniature quilts magazine was still publishing, I entered their annual contest that was judged by well known quilters. The whole point was to make myself cut into two types of fabrics. The hand dyeds I'd slaved over and the Hoffman metallics, far too pretty to cut up.

So I combined the two into a really clever little miniature quilt. I still love that quilt.
I got high marks across the board, except for one big minus. They didn't feel the fabrics were an appropriate combination. I did and still do. And now all the hand dyeds are used up and the last of the Hoffmans are being used as leader enders.

Fear isn't what is stopping you, it is the anticipation of fear. Here is a little (Y) kick to get you started.

Wow Gladys! I never thought it out so far before. You are right! All my material is so gosh darned pretty and I spent a lot of time choosing each piece. Ok. I can add to my stash if I mess up, or rather start one! Thank you for the info and the welcome! I am from Boonville which is in the tip of southern IN.

Thank you TeresaA. Yes, a small project will be a better start than a big one. It is like going to a buffet and remembering you ate already after you filled up your plate! So many fabrics and patterns.

I so appreciate knowing even seasoned quilters have a qualm or two when cutting new material. I have a fabric store which offers classes about a mile from my home, but they have never had an opening. Busy place. The other one is about 25 miles away. Gas prices, etc. I just hate to spend the money on gas, but it may be the only alternative. I do feel like I need class or two in quilting. Thanks for the response!
