I'm jealous but it would be chicken massacre if I had them. My city/town allows 4 hens (no roosters) Unfortunately, even with a sturdy coop, raccoons are very smart and are very urban and would find a way to get to the hens (they are no long as nocturnal around here and do not seem to be afraid of humans. It's unfortunate because fresh eggs are very tasty. Have fun with your chickens.

The hubs started to put a "coop" together with out telling me. He didn't think I would object. I told him it looked like a chicken coop and if he was planning on doing something like that to me as a surprise, he would end up with the chickens he bought being defeathered and butchered by the time he got home after work. That was the only way we were going to have any chickens. I was busy enough for over 20 years taking care of dogs without having to take care of chickens. I spent almost 2 weeks on my uncle's farm with a large hen house I learned to tend and gather eggs. I also learned to slaughter and prep for a meal. He ended up selling the equipment to someone who cared.

Chickens are fun to own and this little coop is just perfect. Enjoy and you'll see the difference from store bought eggs right away.

I loved when I kept chickens. One of my favorite sites is still Fresh Eggs Daily. If you haven't seen it, you should look it up on FB. Lots of wonderful chicken fun, care and everything chicken. Your coop is a really nice start. I am excited for you. Keep us posted.

We had chickens when my children were growing up - 15 years ago. I loved them. We did have a mean rooster that was not around for long. Anything from the garden that we didn't eat went to the chickens so I never felt we were wasteful. Sadly, something got into the coop each night and killed one chicken until they were all gone. Don't want to have to go through that again. Lucky you! Enjoy!

Nothing better than fresh eggs. As a little girl I was always around my grandparents who were chicken growers, with houses of chickens like 10,000 for each growing time. Then when I was about 16 my parents took over their business so I have been around chickens a lot. My grand parents always had the chicken coop too for eggs. They did a lot of things for self sufficiency. No better food than what grandma put out on the long table for dinner. All of it what they grew in one way or another. It makes me hungry just to think about it. lol...

I do know opossums and raccoons love to kill and eat chickens. You need a very strong coop for them at night. Loose dogs will kill them also. Never ate freshly gathered eggs. Store bought is good enough for me.
