I probably would use the plaid fabric as the others patterns would interfer with your pretty appliques. A thin black for the app. would be nice and maybe ina few pop in another color to emphasize a portion.

It's going to be a darling quilt and I know some little guy will love it!

Thanks for the compliment...I hope it will be much loved...
Thanks for all of the ideas...yes, I am going to sash it, posted below are the 3 fabrics I am considering, any ideas on those, too?? I really like all the ideas so far, the black thread is one I am leaning towards...besides my old match each part, which really does take so long...thanks again for your ideas, and opinions on the sashing fabric...

I would use a medium to dark grey and use it for everything with a blanket stitch. The color of the propeller or the scoop on the backhoe. I recently did this on a quilt and it was darling - gave a little bit of a vintage look. Normally I use matching thread but it was a relief to use one color and not have to change all the time. Those blocks are so, so cute. You did a beautiful job of choosing colors and fusing. Please post a pic of the quilt when you're done.

If you really want to do one color for applique how about a cream color??? I think black would be to much and wouldn't show on the tires and white would get lost in the back ground color of the block and gray I just don't see it. A nice cream color would be my choice.
