I started sewing pretty young via my Mama's ancient black iron post WW2 White sewing machine. Never had an incident or accident on it. Fast forward 30-40 years and I sewed through my finger on my beloved Bernina while staying up way to late to finish a costuming job. Mayor Munchkin's coat was a booger to make & I was tired. Ended up with broken needle parts in my left pointer finger - required a tetanus shot just to be safe & made everyone at the Dr's office cringe.
Anyway - my point is my accident happened because I was tired & got careless. A supervised child should be fine.

    Good Luck!

there are a lot of guards made, generally they fit in the needle post were you can put one of these guides for quilting even distances.

    lots of images herehttps://www.google.com/search?q=need...w=1366&bih=625

I'm all about vision so don't want anything in front of my eyes.
And we've heard lots of stories here about adults running the needle through their finger...it is all about attention I think?
I think almost anyone who has sewn for years -- making clothes, household items, or quilt making -- has hit a finger or thumb with a needle. I certainly have and my left thumb is proof; the nail splits in the middle due to a damaged nail bed from a sewing machine needle. That said, I think anything that helps protect children -- or anyone -- learning to sew is a great idea!
