I use this inexpensive way for large spool, I have empty CD container (round with a post in the middle) and I put it on something to make stand a little higher and put my large cones on that works wonderful and it's recycling!!

I saw on one web site that you can just slip a drinking straw over the original thread holder.

I am assuming you mean the cones of thread. I have a separate cone holder (2 styles in the latest Connecting Threads catalog) and I use the cones from CN on it all the time. Works like a charm for me!

I found a wooden spool cover for my thread holder on my machine that is bigger and holds the larger spools quite well. I also have a stand alone spool holder. If you get one of these, be sure to get one with a heavy base. If you get the plastic base it will topple over and move around so you're not that much better off. I can check to see what brand the spool cover is if you want.

Ok at the risk of getting lemons thrown at me...please don't waste your money on the plastic stand-its flimsy, the tall stem didn't stay in so I tried gluing it in the little hole, that didn't last long, talking from personal experience spend the money and get a metal one.

if the coffee cup thing doesn't work for you take a spool to your drug store and ask the pharmacist if he has a pill bottle that it will fit in. I have all my embroidery thread stored that way with labels of the color and then I just take the top off and thread my machine.
