Which would you nominate for worst/best book-to-movie adaptation?

I'm always disappointed with the movie after reading the book.And if I see the movie before reading the book I'm still disappointed in the movie. I see a better movie with a much better cast in my minds eye.

Best: To Kill A Mockingbird
Worst: Snow Falling on Cedars
Mockingbird is one that I had seen the movie first, several times. So when I read the book, it was a leisurely visit with old friends. In addition, there were things I finally understood about the movie. Still love them both.
Cedars is a lovely lyrical book about many universal themes and they turned the movie into a simple trial, who dun it.
I just realized that both of these are about, among other things, prejudice. I guess that is one of my triggers.

I don't read that many books that are made into movies but I have to say the movie "Water for Elephants" was a real disappointment. I loved the book but they left so much out of the movie and changed things.

I liked the first Harry Potter movie -- but then, I liked the first book better than the others. After the first one, the movies were better, I thought.

I agree though, that my imagination is way better than any movie could be. I hear that the "Girl Who" books made great movies. The last one -- the "girl who kicked the hornets nest " made me want more -- Too bad the author died so young. Has anyone seen the movies??

Too late to edit previous post but I think the Harrison Ford versions of the Tom Clancy novels--the "Jack Ryan" movies were as good as or better than the books because although men enjoy his detailed descriptions of military technology, I don't. Skipping on to the good ol' action parts for me!
For those of you pro- and con- Stephen King people, I submit "The Shawshank Redemption" a superior adaptation of his short story of the same name.
I have read "The Stand" twice and unless Peter Jackson would do it I don't believe it could be brought to the screen in a way that would satisfy me. The characters were so strongly drawn by King that their image comes through. I did love Miguel Ferrer, Laura San Giacomo, Matt Frewer and Ray Walston's casting in the mini-series and although Gary Sinise is one of my favorite contemporary actors he was not MY Stu Redmond.

Bad movies...let's see...almost every Stephen King one, the worst being The Shining with Jack Nicholson (the remake with Steven Weber was truer to the book and I thought much better).
