or maybe a shadowbox which is more modern or a quilt with folded fabric for a more 3 dimensional quilt.

My daughter is the same. She doesn't want anything that looks too "old fashioned". She has admired several quilts that I found by Googling "modern" quilts. They are more contemporary and I'm starting to really like the clean lines and use of a lot of solid fabrics.

I think when people say they don't like "traditional" or "regular" quilts they are trying to say they don't like scrappy or "patterned" block alignments. I think the labyrinth or one of the Java quilts might be to her liking. Java if she's younger (Under 18) or something like a bargello or labyrinth is she's older (out of high school). I would show her some of the stuff out there and see what she says. There are some with flip flops, denim pockets, appliques. Does she have favorite colors? Does she like circles, squares, sharp lines, curvy lines? Let her be part of the design process. Let her start by looking at the quilts in this topic and the links like Java. Good luck what ever you do. If she helps design it, she'll love it and the memory of sharing the process will be the best.

You'll find several great patterns here, I've made a couple and they are pretty easy and look beautiful!
