Dottie I'm not sure but assumed it was the quilting foot with the spring on that can hop when you do F MQ

I use my 1/4" foot a lot. I use the spring action darning foot for quilting, and I use the walking foot occasionally

Definetly walking foot and then the one with the circle end to do FMQ, I quess the third would be the good old staple that came with your machine

My right, my left (the feet attached at the ankles!) and the foot that came with the machine. I've never changed the foot and have no clue as to what it's called. I call it the "all purpose" foot. I do everything with it, from clothing repairs to FMQ.

I use four...my open toe embroidery foot (#20) to get a perfect scant ¼" seam, my darning/quilting/hopping foot, my walking foot, and my right foot to make the machine start and stop.

I use the regular zigzag foot for piecing on my Singer 401A. The right edge of that is a perfect guide for scant 1/4". Then, I use the walking foot on the same machine for straight line quilting (or gentle curves). I keep my Bernina set up for FMQ with the darning foot.

I use the original straight stitch foot that comes with every machine, a walking foot & the hopping or darning foot for FMQ. Most straight stitching is done well with either of the first two. The walking foot advances the top at the same speed as the bottom of your quilt theoretically and the hopping/darning foot is for any curvy FMQ as it allows you to move the quilt wherever you want it to stitch. I hope that helps.

I ordered the darning (hopping) foot for my 1985ish Viking, and it worked fine for 4 months. Then the metal part that made it hop broke. I was right in the middle of fmq, and didn't want to wait for another, so I tried fmq with just a regular foot.
    It worked just fine!
Later, I found a site that a bunch of people with the same machine had the experience of their foot breaking too, so I told them my experience.
So, I have a clear open toe foot that I use instead of a darning foot, and have been for the last year or so

I wanted to add that this particular machine has a dial for foot pressure, and one marked specifically 'darning' and I always use that when fmq

What is a hopping foot? I might have one and not know it!
