Opinions on Brother?

I have a $89 Brother that was my first machine when I started quilting 4 years ago. It's STILL going strong. Two years ago, when I decided I needed something with more options, I bought a top-rated brand. I've had nothing but trouble with it. Right before Christmas I received a Brother SC 9500 as a gift that came from Sears. It's WONDERFUL!!! Brother is now my go-to choice for a new machine! ALWAYS!

I have a Brother SQ9000 which I got at Wal*Mart a few years' ago. I think it was about $200-300. It's light and I take it to classes instead of my heavy Bernina. So far, I've had no trouble with it. Many on the board have Janomes and love them. If you go to a shop that sells sewing machines, tell them what you're looking for and the price range. You may be able to get a very nice used one.

I have a Brother SE400. I bought it through Amazon on their Black Friday deal a couple of years ago, but Wal-Mart also sells the same model. It is computerized, about $350 or less on sale. It is about a mid-weight, but still light enough to take with you. Have not had a problem with it no matter what I have sewed. I really want to invest in one of the top-of-the-line Brother or Janome, but it will be a long time before that will happen. Good luck in your decision process.

My main machine is a Innovis NX2000 and I bought a CS 6000 as a back up machine for less than 200. I used it for a week as my primary machine to make sure I liked it - and it is super! Definitely not as heavy duty but a great little sewing machine.

I am looking for a travel machine... and having trouble finding one I really like in my price range, even used. ($300ish)... so now I am thinking of maybe looking at cheaper brands. I have a poor opinion of Brother, but it isn't really based on anything concrete... so what are your opinions? Should I be more open minded or am I right to think they aren't very good machines?
... I want computerized, and would love it to have an automatic thread cutter, but so far the best I have been able to come up with is the Janome DC1050 for $299. At least it would be computerized and new with a warranty, but I hear they don't hold up well over time.
