I think I have more rules than I previously thought. I always make a copy of the quilt pattern so I can write on it and it always stays right with the fabric. A book is a pain to carry around. I use the wastebasket constantly and the floor doesn't get too messy. I'm pretty good about keeping needles in a certain place as well as all threads. I always have a leader and ender project going since I read Marsha McCloskey's book, sometimes I have 2 or 3 simple quilts that are going at the same time. One serious rule is to avoid making blocks with more than 10-12 pieces in them, they are pretty, but I just don't like making them. My quilting room is messy with books and fabric all over the table and I love it all. I can produce a great number of lovely quilts that are rather simple each year.

. Me too!. I just retired two years ago. When I was still working spare time was scarce and I needed to get right to the sewing. Now that I'm retired I seem to have that same mentality and have a hard time slowing down, forgetting that I have a lot more time than I used to.

My rule is remembering that at my age I'm on the downhill slide and I must quilt all my fabric before I go to the great fabric store in the sky! A messy house and a dirty house are two different animals. If it doesn't smell, my feet don't stick to the kitchen floor, I can walk through each room without stepping over stuff and can do a quick one hour clean if someone calls to say they are coming by then I am required by the rule to quilt all day.

I don't have any must do rules in quilting. I do what I feel like needs to be done the moment I want to do it. I have zero OCD and I think that may be as bad as having too much of it.

I never ever use scant 1/4 seams. I have tried it twice and that is enough for me

    Cindi,
If I did that, I'd never get a chance to sew.

Cutting my pieces accurately is a must!

Clean out machine of dust bunnies and oil before I start to sew.

Most of the machines I sew with are older than I am, they get very fussy if not oiled frequently.
Last night I was sewing with a 81 year old Singer 201k treadle.

I never straighten up my sewing room!!! Every time I do, it takes me at least six months to find everything again! The clutter is dreadfull, but I know where everything is. My one major rule is to make sure I take care of my equipment - clean and oil the machine, make sure none of the cords are crimped, sharpen pencils, put all the glues in a cool (not cold) place, etc.
