Call me a skeptic, but I use Gutermann all the time with no problem.
Personally, I think your LQS owner is trying to sell you some more expensive thread.
The last time I bought 40 wt Sulky, and had to take it off my machine because it kept breaking. It looked beautiful, but was too soft for my freemotion quilting.
Just use what works for you, and let the quilt police go bark up a tree. :P

I use Gutterman most of the time. The only problem I have
with it is that when I finish sewing a seam and cut the thread
it curls around my machines foot. I also like Mettler. My
machine is a Janome 6600. I bought some Aurafil but haven't
used it yet. I clean my machine after every project too.

WOW! Good for you! nice present!

I love guttermann thread, its the coats/clarke thread I don't like, I prefer gutterman over anything else never had a problem with it, I usually get it when it is on sale and stock up. I have a Janomme and have no problem using it.

I was told by the Bernina dealer some time ago to not use Gutterman as it was trash and would not work well with Bernina.

I use Gutterman, Sulky, Isofil, Mettler, Coates, Dewhurst, (some of it old, inherited stuff), Signature, Superior threads, Wonderfil, etc etc. They all serve a purpose for different jobs. The only ones to avoid are the hand quilting threads which have a coating on them that interferes with tension discs and the el - cheapo threads that break all of the time.

Isn't it funny? My Bernina dealer recommended Gutterman...

Bottom line, use what your machine likes.

Some of the Gutterman thread is made in Germany and some of it (Hancock Fabrics) is made in Mexico. Check your spools to see where it is manufactured. The Gutterman made in Mexico is horrible, i.e., frays i the needle breaks, is full of lint) but the Gutterman made in Germany is of high quality and is great. Hancock Fabrics here in Oklahoma City carries the Gutterman made in Mexico and Jo-Ann Fabrics carries the Gutterman made in Germany.
