I live between Joplin and Springfield, Helicopters flew over all night long, I assume transporting injured to Springfield, My heart aches for those hurting from this. They said it was a rain-wrapped tornado and wasn't easily seen or heard due to the heavy rain and hail that surrounded it. A lot of folks in this area do not have basements. There are a lot of folks from surrounding areas that have volunteered to help. God bless the help and the hurting.

It was a sleepless night after the devastation less than 60 miles away.. Helicopters flew over us from Springfield and Joplin all night probably transporting medical teams and bringing back those caught in that horror..Today, My Neighbors and friends helped in the search and rescue... Tears were shed as they talked about the horrible, horrible sight uncovering the number of fatalities they found.. Prayers out to families who lost loved ones, prayers that they find survivors, and prayers that Mother Nature is done already..

Thunderstorms warnings have been airing all afternoon and evening.. Joplin Cant even catch a break today..

As of today 5/23/2011, 116 people have died there.
DGD said on a newscast about 5 or 6pm DST today, they said 128 died.

3 hrs ago phoned my Fl friends who reside in Joplin.-I'm in Canada.
She has gone to Springfield to her daughters. Hubby at lake.
The house close to the hospital where she was is destroyed.

Then I remembered that a lady from QB resides in Joplin so I pm'd her but so far no reply. I think she lived in a mobile home and that is always a concern too. Hope she is OK .

They are now saying at least 116 killed and 2,000 buildings destroyed - mostly homes. You can read the article above.

Prayers for all those affected by this tragedy.

How in the world do you move that many patients to safety in such a short amount of time? I sure hope that these violent storms end soon.
they were supposed to have 20 min. warning, in reality they had about 5.
many do not have basements and after seeing the pictures of destruction I wonder have much protection the basements really offered
Well I think the basements did help as this happened at peak travel time, the number of deaths is now at 116 and the population is over 30,000. so even though that is a lot of lives lost it could have been MUCH worse considering the amount of structural destruction. I know that growing up in Tornado alley, tornado safety is something you hear about constantly from birth.. it's always being talked about on TV, radio and schools, whether you are concentrating on what's being said or not it's always around you and that stuff does soak in. just like the folks in the convenience store that moved into the cooler. If they had stayed just in the store they would probably have been lost.. but the cooler survived .. and them in it.

Horrible. All I can do is send donations to the Red Cross.
