I think if you arrange the triangles all the same direction would help - I think the gold works, it is on the modern side look and feel wise to me........... :-)

I would rearrange the blocks kind of like a monkey wrench pattern. Then the black/light triangles will look like they belong.

I have not read all the comments but I think rearranging the blocks could help diminish the impact of the gold.
Also, NOT varying the direction of the gold triangle might help.
AND not putting all the dark ones together.

Take pictures as you rearrange so if you like previous iteration, you can recreate it!
(Where would we be without digital cameras!)

I really do not think what you have done is bad...once you actually sew it together you might like it better!
