I taught 4-H sewing for years, and the youngest was 9...it was a lot of fun. My husband did take the foot pedals apart and put a small block of wood in them so they couldn't be depressed to super fast speeds! He also made cubes, kind of like little foot stools for the foot pedals because at 9, it was just easier for them to reach the pedals if they were elevated. Don't know if that would work now on computerized machines...but I would teach kids on the most basic machines I could find, anyway.

I started sewing at about 7 too, with Grandma at my shoulder. It took me a long time to do something dumb enough to hurt me. Last year I sewed right through my index finger. No permanent damage, but WOW was that a lesson learned. If your pupil wants to sew, she will listen to you and be careful

I frequently do (redwork) while traveling. My 8 year old grandaughter has shown an interest so I traced several simple shapes on some scrap muslin and she completed them in a short period of time. I have since provided more simple forms for her to do and when we are together she "bugs" me to sew with her. I plan on having her over so we can sew them into a quilt sometime this summer. I had better get busy ad time is running out !!!!'

I started my grand daughter on a little girl's sewing machine when she was four. She has tried on my Babylock too, only because I can slow it way down. She doesn't do it a lot, but she likes to help guide the machine on my long arm when I don't care what the quilting pattern looks like.

They each completed 2 coasters, doing the layout, pinning, sewing, clipping corners and turning the corners. Worked out great. Next week... little tote bags.
My DDs are turning 9 and 11 this month and next. They've been sewing since they were 5 and I'm still a nervous wreck when they sit down to the machine. They each have their own Janomes so I can regulate their speeds (though my oldest doesn't need that so much anymore) and I set the machines on their own table in the middle of the floor so I can keep my chair right next to them while they're sewing.

I learned young on a Child's machine that I still have. However, today I was at KMart and they had a Singer Pixie-Plus that had more than the chain stitch, I think it has 4-6 stitches. It definitely would have been more fun than the machine I started on.
Also, if you machine has a speed control on it, they could learn the control that everyone is talking about by setting it on "turtle speed."

Happy quilting,
Susan

My Grandkids all sew and there ages are 11,9, and 8..The older are boys and the 8 year old is a girl...They all got together and made a lap quilt for there mom for Mother's Day, I did all the cutting and they put it together and sewed it...it can out pretty good for there first quilt..they took turns sewing so it worked out well and all of them had a hand in making it..They used my #1+ Hus and I turned the speed down to really slow and told them to watch there fingers...when one got tired of sewing the other tool over..

I made pillows with my 8 and 9 year old grand daughters this past week. My daughter and I did the cutting and the pinning and supervised the sewing and ironing. they did great. Keep the time to about an hour at a time, after that they start to lose interest.

I have a sewhandy child's sewing machine that I demonstrated to my 8 year old grandson. After playing with it myself, I thought it would be safer to teach him to use my Bernina. He practiced for several month, then we started his quilt. he sewed the blocks himself. When we had enough to make a queen size quilt to fit his bed we placed them the way he wanted them to be and finished his quilt together. His Mother is so proud of him. He told her that he will teach her to quilt some day.
