Toverly & NYgal: when I do QAYG I do each block individually and only quilt the block and batting. I cut the batting about an inch or so larger than my block. To connect the next block I add the sashing to the block then trim the batting so it meets in the middle of the sashing. I use batting tape on the sashing to hold it flat. I do each row this way. After the whole quilt top/batting is assembled, I spray baste the backing and sew down and across all the sashing strips 1/4" in from each edge. The backing looks very plain-looks like a grid from quilting in the sashing. This eliminates all the hand sewing of the blocks on the back and it lays flatter (at least for me) than the traditional QAYG method. I hope this makes sense--I made this up trying to manage the 1.5 million blocks in the FWS quilt. Just kidding--how many were there, Carrie? At least 100.

Mudose8, here's a pic of 2 of the blocks from FWS. They're just blocks quilted onto the batting, no backing. My batting is cut larger than the blocks to go into the sashing. At the time I quilted these I wasn't sure what width my sashing would be. When I decided on 1 1/2" sashings I trimmed the batting to 3/4" around each block. I don't have a pic of the back of the finished quilt but I did all the blocks and borders this way before attaching the backing.

Hi
Sample block completed and went together well and it looks great . I have brought most of my fabric (2hrs in the fabric shop last weekend) I have now looked on the couple of different on line shops to match other fabric to match in, now it should not take me 2hrs this weekend in the fabric shop. I wished I had a little more time to get my fabric from US (so much cheaper than here in Australia) any way now to get all the patterns traced and cut out,and my fabric cut in the next 2 week.
One question what do batting do you use for a plate mat (for putting hot dishes on, on your table)
Merry Christmas to everyone.

The batting I think you are referring to is called Thermal Batting, it is heat resistant. I think you can get it from OZquilts or Punch with Judy may have it if your local quilt store doesn't carry it. Good luck
