I use batting tape on the sashing to hold it flat. I do each row this way. After the whole quilt top/batting is assembled, I spray baste the backing and sew down and across all the sashing strips 1/4" in from each edge. The backing looks very plain-looks like a grid from quilting in the sashing. This eliminates all the hand sewing of the blocks on the back and it lays flatter (at least for me) than the traditional QAYG method. I hope this makes sense--I made this up trying to manage the 1.5 million blocks in the FWS quilt. Just kidding--how many were there, Carrie? At least 100.
Jan, do you think you could post a picture ?

Mudose8, here's a pic of 2 of the blocks from FWS. They're just blocks quilted onto the batting, no backing. My batting is cut larger than the blocks to go into the sashing. At the time I quilted these I wasn't sure what width my sashing would be. When I decided on 1 1/2" sashings I trimmed the batting to 3/4" around each block. I don't have a pic of the back of the finished quilt but I did all the blocks and borders this way before attaching the backing.

I've decided on my colors, blacks whites greys plus one popper, I'm leaning toward cheddars, but red and gold are in the running.

One question what do batting do you use for a plate mat (for putting hot dishes on, on your table)

Merry Christmas to everyone.
Hi Lyn
The batting I think you are referring to is called Thermal Batting, it is heat resistant. I think you can get it from OZquilts or Punch with Judy may have it if your local quilt store doesn't carry it. Good luck

Thank you both janRN and Mudose8, for sharing how you do QAYG. I started the first block this morning. So far so good. One section of it is done three more sections to go.

thermal batting is also sold at Joann's. they may not call it that but it states on it that it is for making things for the microwave, hot plate, etc.

I also do QAYG but I add my backing on as I go. It does take some hand sewing on the back but I don't mind. Oh I also do it as a row at a time. My avatar was done as a quilt as you go.
