    Default Brands on fabric

Grrrrrr! I may be new to quilting but fabric companies certainly shouldn't be; yes, I understand branding but why on earth do they feel it necessary to go over 1/4 beyond the selvage into the fabric; to make this case even worse; it is flannel so there will be lots of shrinkage. I don't know what I will end up with but it could make the size of the baby quilt a bit smaller as I had figured one whole cut for the back. It just seems to me they should realize what they are doing; and yes I know......wouldn't have had to buy it but it is what I wanted for this quilt. Okay enough of that. Thanks everyone on all the tips for working with flannel, I certainly appreciate them.

It happens on 100% cottons too! That is why when figuring yardage for a project, I always use 40" instead of 42-44". I would rather have some fabric left over than run the risk of not purchasing enough!

I always overbuy by at least 1/4 to 1/2 yard depending on how much of a particular fabric will be used in the quilt. The more of it in there - the more I buy. Not just for the problem you mention but to cover my own booboos as well!

That is a really large brand tag on that fabric, but I love what I can see of that fabric. It must be really cute!

I think that is why selvage quilts and projects are so popular. I've asked my quiltie friends to save theirs for me.

I had one fabric where there was a full 2 inch white strip selvage on an expensive fabric. I would have left it in the store but it was the perfect colour for my project. Grrrrr, hate that!

Maybe they are trying to accommodate the craze for using selvages.

I used the same cute flannel. Nursery prints from Joanns. Yes, huge selvages.
