I just bought some large spools of thread to try and save some money. I usually just buy the small thread spools. My question is what is the best way to keep the thread from unraveling from the spool they don't have a notch like the small spools do?

I use baby pony tail holder from the dollar store. lots in a pkg and cheap!

Gale, love your idea. Also you could try that white tape plumbers use to seal joins in water pipes, not sure what it's called. It's not sticky but stretches which holds firm.

Does anyone still wear knee-high stockings? If so, you could slip one of those over the spool... and still see the color.

I use a plastic bag and put any bobbins I've wound into the bag with the thread.

You can buy a mesh sleeve that you pull over the spools.

Another use for painter's tape in the sewing room!

I use thread nets, also called thread socks, since I also use these while sewing with the thread cones. Superior sells them. Also some people have said that they can get the same kind of net cheaper or free from a florist.
