Default Opinions on Brother?

I am looking for a travel machine... and having trouble finding one I really like in my price range, even used. ($300ish)... so now I am thinking of maybe looking at cheaper brands. I have a poor opinion of Brother, but it isn't really based on anything concrete... so what are your opinions? Should I be more open minded or am I right to think they aren't very good machines?

... I want computerized, and would love it to have an automatic thread cutter, but so far the best I have been able to come up with is the Janome DC1050 for $299. At least it would be computerized and new with a warranty, but I hear they don't hold up well over time.

I have a Brother C5-6000 that I use for travel.

The operation manual is complete and informative, the attachments that came with it are nice. It even has optional accessories like a walking foot, quilting foot, 1/4 inch foot.---basically quilters package.

I have had no problems with it..Nice light carry around sewing machine.

I bought it over 10 years ago for under $200.

Costco sells several Brother models. I'm unfamiliar with any of them, but you can't go wrong with the Costco return policy!

I have had a Brother for about 10 years and love it! Got it at the time at Wal Mart just before Christmas as they had a special on it. I'm glad to hear Costco carries them as I am looking for another machine as we have just become snow birds. I have only heard good things about the Janome brand. This will be an interesting thread of opinions. Good luck!

I have a Brother that I purchased from Walmart 3 years ago it has the scant 1/4 in setting that works perfect for piecing, it also has 6 other dedicated quilting settings!!! I paid 150.00 and I use it more than my Janome 6500. I am very happy with it!!!

I own three different Brother machines and I love them all. I've never had a problem.

The Brother and Janome have a fairly good reputation, even in the low end models, so I wouldn't have a problem getting either, but one thing I absolutely would NOT buy, is a new Singer, regardless of the price, but this is my own personal opinion.

Does Costco sell them in the stores or only on line. I do not have a membership there but if hey are cheaper than othercstores itmight be worth the $50.00 .

I have three basic brothers. I like them all. They are not fussy about anything. I do believe they sell them on line
