Default Need help down sizing Storm at Sea block /pattern

I need help down sizing the Storm at Sea Block. Jodi Barrows method waste too much fabric for my taste. I found a block at Generations quilt patterns, but its 12 inches. I want to make a wall hanging apx 40 inches wide with a heart and a few other things and would like a 9 or 10 inch block. I would be very grateful. Thank you. Donna

Craftsy has a Entwined Heart pattern that seems to be what you are looking for.

One of the many delights of a quilting program is doing resizing super easily. I use QuiltPro

There are various ways to make SAS blocks. Looking at the Generations quilt site, they have 2: one made on a 3X3 grid and one made on a 4X4. Which block do you want to make? It makes a difference as to what size(s) you can easily make. You can resize the 3X3 to multiples of 3, and the 4X4 can be resized to multiples of 4. So in other words, you can downsize the 3x3 version to a 9" or the 4X4 to an 8", but a 10 inch block is not possible with piecing although you could draft a paper piecing pattern.
To resize, draw the block you are interested in and then draw the grid lines dividing it up into even sections.
For example, draw the 3X3 version out on a piece of paper. Now divide it up like a 9 patch. The square in a square in the upper right winds up to be 3" square finished, the diamonds are 3 X6 finished, and the large SIS is 6x6 finished.

Default Storm at sea response

this is a simple modification. The subunits finish at 4x8 and squares of 4 and 8". Redraw the subunits so they are 3 and 6 inch squares and 3x6" finished size.

Do you have a scanner? Just reduce by 25% and that should give you a 9" block. You will have to redraw your 1/4" because that will shrink too.

Thank you all who have responded. I value all your responses. Now to start the paper piece process. Congrats on you win gramqlts. This is a wedding gift for my son and his bride in August. My fabric is blues and greens batiks plus some pop colors. I'll send pic to you all when I get there.
