Default size matters

hello all,
I am hoping to get some good advice here.
I have a window that does not open and about 3 months of the year the sun comes in. I would like to make a quilted wall hanging that covers it. I want to use a tension rod to hang it.
What I need to know is how wide I should sew the quilt. The window is 31 inches and I would like the quilt to fit snug. I need to compensate for shrinkage of the fabric when washed and shrinking due to quilting.
So, any suggestions as to how wide I should make the flimsy?

I don’t prewash usually because I like the crinkly look, but when I made a similar curtain to block the glass in our front door, I prewashed the cotton yardage and used poly batting. I constructed it to my measurements and the shrinkage was minimal, it all worked out perfectly.

Have you considered that the sun will fade the fabrics even through the backing and batting?

Welcome!

Pre-wash the fabrics since shrinking is a concern. You can also use a liner fabric that is sun-resistant. Be sure the tension rod is sturdy enough to hold the wall-hanging.

A bit too large would be better than too small.

Make it over sized and quilt it. zig zag (or serge) the edge and then wash. After it has been washed, trim to the correct size and bind.

This would be my concern. I would like to suggest that you have some kind of black paper or something really dark to block out the sunshine then hang your quilt.

yes, it will fade, that's ok with me, then I can make another if I'm still around.

Thanks, Cathy, that's a great idea! Then it will be just right.
